Hey everyone, still working on finding a donor for my swap and had some questions. I've heard the DMV sometimes checks a code on the engine before you can change fuel type to 'D' to verify year and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this. What else does the code tell? Cause I found a decent donor but it is a J code and I would have to swap egr equipment onto it.

off topic but things like this make me wonder why anyone that works on their own stuff would ever want to live in california...stupid emissions stuff...
anyways are you sure that they don't check the vin #?? one of the letters in your vin number designates a diesel engine. the only code that they could really check is the casting number on the block. sorry I guess that I'm not much help here

Lived in So Cal most my life, never heard anything about switchin' to diesel, but i do know that they require the "new" engine to be the same year or newer.
You might get away with it if you were switching to the same type of engine, if you made it look like it was the original. But I think this change is too drastic, I think they will be goin' over it with a fine tooth comb.

Ya I have been looking for a 6.2 for a while and most I find in my price range are pre 88.
I have learned that switching to diesel is a case by case thing. Some people get realllllly picked over. Some look and see it's a diesel and say ok ur good.

the only codes are a date code stamped in the valley of the block. can't really see it with intake on. if they knew how to read it, they still probably couldn't see it.. the earliest ones had an actual year stamped on the drivers rear on the firewall side, aagain, near impossible to see. no stampings to indicate j or c code, that was in the vehicle vin number. no block differences, all the differences were external

There is also no real way for them to know if it is a 6.2 or a 6.5 block
There appears to be a VIN on the blocks, but I have yet to verify if it matches up with the vehicle it was originally installed in.

I've never seen a VIN number anywhere on any of the blocks I've worked on. The eight digit of the truck's VIN will tell them if it was a gas engine or a diesel as built by GM. I've not had my DMV ever ask about verifying numbers, they just ask me whether it's gas or diesel when I apply for a title change.

It is very hard to see, just a light stamping.
