This sucks, California new law says that we have to have diesels smoged. Question is, my truck has egr blocker plate and finger stick. Do I need to remove them when I take it in for the smog check, can they be detected with there tests, or visual. My finger is hid in the loom. Don't want to have to pay twice, once for them to tell me it failed test or remove blocker & finger. And again after put back to stock.
Thanks

From what I understand it is an OBD2 test as well as a visual test for emissions equipment and visable smoke. I whould think the finger stick would allow you to pass the OBD2 test and the EGR blockers are usually hard to spot unless you know what you are looking for. Do you still have your cat installed on the truck? I do know there are several others having issues with aftermarket products installed. From what I understand CARB does not have a test to certify aftermarket products on diesels. This means that there are no legal diesel aftermarket products. This would include intake and exhaust systems.

This post is incorrect.

If you modify the truck from the stock state it tecnically can fail, however there are ARB approved items such as intakes, fass pump ETC that either have a CARB # or are not looked at as a racing modification.

Yep dezl is correct. All the emission mods that were made ie pcv reroute, fingerstick etc
all need to be put back to stock or it won't pass smog.

Does the same apply for what 10 years back when you don't have to smog them?

Technically anything that affects emissions needs to be stock, which would require removing the blocker. However, I doubt on the first pass they are going to be swift enough to notice. Maybe later when the get better at it, they will find it. I bet they are looking for the big items like missing cats and DPFs. You could probably get away with a hollowed out cat, but that won't work with a truck that needs a DPF, since it should make no visible smoke. All speculation on my part, but I would risk leaving the blocker in since it is not likely to be noticed and it would be a pain to take out.

Could you recommend a place that sells such items? I'm looking to squeeze a bit more power out of my truck, but don't want to run afoul of Big Brother.

How often will they need to be smogged? Will it be evry two years like cars, or more frequently?

Yes, just like the gassers, it will be every two years. The start of the program is based on VIN number with half on year one and the other half on year two. Also, from what I understand, diesels do not get the five year exemption when new, unlike gasoline cars and trucks :(

Do a search guys....There are other threads on here that have discussed all of this extensively and have some links to what will be tested.....

i took my truck into a local shell station in visalia ca. i was wondering what they did for a diesel smog check, so i asked?? inspector asked me tp pop the hood, checked the intake, ok looked under the truck and said did the truck come with a cat, i acted dumb, and said not sure. so he looked it up in the book he had and said yep it needs a cat to pass. i have pcv re route that i will leave and also the blocker plate as well, i will go back to the same shop as soon as i need my truck smoged because the really did not know what they were looking for, look for a shop that dont know much about diesels:cool:

I'm due soon. I've read (Diesel Power I think) the test will not check for EGR function so I think I'm going to leave the blocker in place and just make sure to clear any codes right before. Also that intakes and exhaust (catback) will be okay as they don't affect emissions.

Every two years like the cars, but only OBD II check, visual inspection and visible smoke after throttle snap. They don't put them on the dyno and check for exhaust gasses. Becuase of that, they are not going to see the elevated NOx from the blocker and I doubt most techs would notice it at this time unless they have been trained to look for it. I think they are really looking for obvious stuff on this round like cat and DPF deletes and soot emissions from LMMs.
