: Truck hates my wife.
Trios 03-18-2010, 12:50 PM I drove it about a week ago, a short jaunt down to the grocery store and back. I used the windshield wipers and had no problems.
My wife is needing to use the truck today to pick up a bathtub for her dog grooming salon. She gets in, starts it up, and the LOW COOLANT light comes on, so she freaks out and calls me, also mentions that the wipers aren't working. She turns the truck back off so she can get under the hood (afraid of running engine), and then the wipers start to work once the motor's off.
Turns out, yeah, there's no visible coolant in the rad. She's filling it up right now, but was scared enough of the truck BEFORE it decided to piss its coolant so she couldn't drive it.
My current word for her is to let it run a bit with the full rad and look real carefully for leaks, and if she can't find anything to head on her trip, and if the light comes on while driving to pull off and I'll find some way to escape work and help her out.
Why does my truck hate my wife? Why??!
theunderlord 03-18-2010, 12:54 PM She was never nice to it?
Trios 03-18-2010, 01:02 PM She's been very nice to it, she's even let me buy things for the ol' girl, helped me clean her up, etc. My wife's just never been keen on driving the big beast, but she needed to today and the truck just decided not to play.
I haven't heard back from her yet, so I figure it must be fine so far...
turbonator 03-18-2010, 01:15 PM looks like its time to decide trios, truck or .......
Fred482` 03-18-2010, 01:27 PM Part of my lot in life is to serve others. It's just nice to feel needed, my wife calls only when she can't fix it herself, makes me feel needed..........or something..........?
turbonator 03-18-2010, 01:33 PM that is scary talk fred.... it makes me glad im not married......lmfao

After 38 years, she almost has me trained! I told her if anything ever happens to her, I'm not doing this again, I don't have enough years left for someone to train me properly, it appears to be a "work in progress"......
Trios 03-18-2010, 03:45 PM Well, I think the truck behaved itself for the rest of the trip, as I have received no call for help. Now I just have to figure out what's causing it to lose coolant. There goes my Sunday afternoon.
4320Diesel 03-18-2010, 07:42 PM my truck wasnt too awful fond of a couple of my girlfriends either. one time it made me late for a date because it decided it wasnt going to start for anything. then the next time it wouldnt start so i could take her into town. as soon as she said oh ill go later VROOM away she went. my 6.2 just didnt like them. im thinking my 6.2 had a way of knowing that they were going to turn out bad because theyre gone and the 6.2 is still chugging along.
Diaric 03-19-2010, 12:44 AM too funny, and i'm not going to comment about the truck i spend more money on and time with than her,,,,, she just might read it lol
Half Max 03-19-2010, 01:55 AM all i got to say is bros before you know lol j/p my g/f doesnt like my truck wont drive it hates to look at it! lol so i win!
sls639 03-19-2010, 09:24 AM Sounds like your wife knows that you care for your rig, and that she want's to be sure she takes good care of it. Make sure you thank her! Then check for leaks!:thumb:
4320Diesel 03-19-2010, 09:25 AM my one girlfriend didnt mind driving it. she prefered her 87 K20 454 with a NV4500 in it and 35's. damn that was a nice truck. i built most of it for her then she heads off to colledge somewhere in the states!
Trios 03-21-2010, 05:03 PM So, the truck definitely hates my wife. I just want to swear at this truck up one way and down the other right now.
The "Low Coolant" indicator is pretty far down the radiator, about halfway. That's a LOT of coolant to just...disappear. But, today I went out, filled the rad with water (coolant level was about 3" down from the rad cap), started truck. Level stayed pretty much where it was in the rad.
So I fill the reservoir a little ways, put the cap on, jump the high idle and let it sit for about 15 minutes (watching the fuel gush out of the IP also, friggin thing). Unfortunately my coolant reservoir is about impossible to see through, so I have no idea where the water level was when I filled it up, so I can't tell if the level went up when she was warm.
Anyway, I start looking everywhere for leaks. Heater hoses, water pump, both sides of radiator. The heater core isn't leaking or I'd have water all over the passenger side interior.
I put some more water in the reservoir to the point where I can see (and mark) the level, then put some cardboard in front of the grill to block airflow to see if I can heat it up past 185 degrees. Get in, hold the pedal halfway down for 10 minutes or so just listening to the radio and watching the coolant gauge. 185. 185. 185. NEVER GOES OFF 185. EVER.
Shut it down in disgust. Decide to pull radiator cap and see what's up, well, its holding pressure as the 185 degree water splooges out when I turn it, thank God for the towel. Level after I get the cap off is just under the cap, about the amount I expect splooged out.
System holds pressure, water stays in radiator, can't tell if its going up to the expansion tank or not....but it should be. Where the HELL was my leak?
Brent, if you came out here and stole my coolant I will be very upset at you.
4320Diesel 03-21-2010, 06:50 PM i lmao'd at the bottom part like 6 times lol. i wish i had more sig space for it lol.Brent rules can go away now since i rule and everyone knows it so i dont need to make a big deal over it lol.
Diaric 03-21-2010, 08:06 PM i feel better but dissapointed now that brent isn't a diaric only quote guy lol. thanks trios.
and i'm the one that accused him of stealing your coolant lol
Diaric 03-21-2010, 08:08 PM now on topic. how long do you figure it took your coolant to drop trios?
4320Diesel 03-21-2010, 08:17 PM more than none and less than all of it.
oil pan 4 03-21-2010, 08:51 PM You are lucky you never had your mother in law drive your truck for a week.
After a week I had a flat tire, so low on oil I don't know how the engine didnt blow and no fuel, my truck was so low on fuel I put fuel in the tank from a jug before I would drive it 2 miles to the diesel station.
The only thing that was at the proper level was coolant.
turbonator 03-21-2010, 08:59 PM too funny, and i'm not going to comment about the truck i spend more money on and time with than her,,,,, she just might read it lol
at least your not spending the money on strippers....
67_C-30 03-21-2010, 09:09 PM I know the feeling! I got mine running today, so I go in the house and say "Hey babe, I got the dually running!", and she points toward the hall and says, "Go take a shower!" :D
4320Diesel 03-21-2010, 09:37 PM lol. id counter that with, not yet. im gonna drive it around all day then ill take a shower. but then thats why im single right now :p:
Half Max 03-21-2010, 11:32 PM nothing wrong with strippers there nice ladys! lol butttt if ur married u probably should stay away from em ehhh
Trios 03-21-2010, 11:59 PM now on topic. how long do you figure it took your coolant to drop trios?
To drop to the low coolant light level? About 4 months, but that's about 300 miles give or take.
dieselman27 03-22-2010, 12:20 PM seriously 6.2's do not like women my service truck is a 83 custom sierra old millitary 4x4 with a 6.2 and my wife says it is ugly noisy and she hates it if she ever says anything about it while in the driveway the truck will not run if i tell her to appoligize the truck runs fine!! kinda freaky!!!!
Diaric 03-22-2010, 01:11 PM To drop to the low coolant light level? About 4 months, but that's about 300 miles give or take.
well, you know the answers. its a small leak. so bad hose clamp, the drips burn off. very small head gasket problem, bu t you haven't seen any signs. so the odds are its the water pump going very slowly. when the pump goes it can take weeks to narrow it down and confirm. and it may only leak when driving, not sitting.
sls639 03-22-2010, 01:39 PM I've got a small leak in my rad. I had no idea until I pulled it out. It's hiding behind the rad support. With the shroud in place, it makes it impossible to see. It's near the drivers side end cap, just below the return line. Never drips, evaporates too quickly. I never would have known except that the brass has turned patina color (green).
dieselman27 03-22-2010, 04:29 PM i had one it was a very small leak around the neck where the upper radiator hose connected took forever to find. A month later leak was back looked everywhere couldnt find finally put coolant system checker on and found the back intake gasket leaking down the back of the motor onto the bell housing
