Can anyone tell me whether I'll need to put in a rear stabilizer bar in my truck if I'm going to carry a truck camper. Is there such an option for my truck? If so, where do I get the bar from?
I'm already thinking of installing air bags rated at 5000 lbs.
Any advice will be appreciated.

I added a rear bar to my Suburban, as well as upgrading the front bar to a 1 1/4" size. I bought them from Hotchkis. Great stuff, but pricey. The bars are also available from Addco and Hellwig for a bit less money. I highly recommend the rear bar if you're adding a camper. Adding a rear bar will give the vehicle more of a tendency to oversteer. The air bags might be needed, depending on how heavy the camper is. They can't hurt though. Even a little bit of pressure will help level things out.

It is a very good idea to add a rear swaybar if you are carrying a truck camper. If you don't have a front one already add both a front and rear bar. If the camper is a heavy one I would also suggest the air bags. Helwig is the most common swaybar maker but there are a lot of other choices.

Look into the underbed swaybar from Cognito and some airbags. You can see my setup in my garage.

MAX:

We have had a couple of truck campers, in the past it was a big Lance on a GMC dually. No mods necessary. Your 2500 seems a little light in the rear spring department. Is it missing the overload? You may want to add that just as a matter of course.

We now have an Outfitter Apex on our 2500HD. No suspension mods out 2500HD is rated for 9200# and with fuel, one person and not much else it weighs in at 6590#. With the camper on the total, loaded for bear, is right at 9810#, its a little low in the back end and I am going back and forth between airbags and Supersprings.

One complaint on the airbags is that they over compensate and will give you a pogo effect. Lower air pressure seems to be the solution. People who have Supersprings just plain like them. Supersprings do not affect the ride empty, neither do the airbags.

On the issue of sway bars, be sure your shocks are up to the load, I did change out all of the shocks because the fronts were shot. I pogoed front to back over bumps in the road. Good shocks are more important then a sway bar. Supposedly GM does not put a sway bar on the rear of its 4X4 rigs at the factory due to suspension travel, it will limit travel.

My suggestion is to get the TC on and see how the truck handles. I do not have a need for a sway bar, you may. Also, put your tires up to pressure for your load, I am running 80# with the camper. Also, what is your tire weight rating, that is usually the killer in the whole deal.

Put a few miles on it and see how it goes.

Good Camping to you!
