: YAY! pump still on warranty, need help with dealer.
ok so i find out that my warranty on our truck started 08/29/1995. so this means our pump is still under warranty! so now i need to know if theres anything to do before we bring it in to the dealer? anythings to check? tips/tricks would be VERY helpfull.
thanks soooooo much guys, you guys have saved us SO much money already its not even funny:ro)
quantum mechanic 06-27-2005, 01:33 AM yes, you must eliminte the things the dealer will focus on like the cleaning tank and lines and the filter bowl must be clean with a new filter.
nickg 06-27-2005, 01:37 AM If there is metal in the filter bowl leave it in there!!! I have a friend who works for GM and if they find any metal in the filter housing the pump is replaced automatically under warrenty.

Beg to differ, many dealers if metal is found say fuel system is contaminated "metal in bowl comes from dirty fuel", & will want to drop the tank (not covered under warranty) and will not honor any IP warranty claim unless that is cleared up 1st.
Metal in bowl could possibly be a lift pump on it's way out, but highly doubtful it would cause the IP contamination problems, if it's in the bowl, that means the filter IS WORKING, metal after the filter would be a problem.
Rather than give the unscrupulious type of dealers any ammunition to reject a claim, clean any debris from the bowl, install new filter, and test that lift pump is working 1st. (actually this should be step one in your troubleshooting anyway when you started seeing problems, low/no lift pressure can cause poor IP performance so you will need to make sure all is in order there 1st)
You may have to pay for a lift pump or OPS out of pocket 1st, but dealers will do the very same things in an attempt to recover warranty costs, keep recipt to prove you have already done that work, or you might possibly have to pay the dealer these "preliminary troubleshooting fees".
knkreb 06-27-2005, 10:14 PM Yeah, if it's the original IP in a 95, then it's got the steel rollers in the pump. You are a prime target for the "tank cleaning" sur-charge. Stealers get a glean in their eyes when they see ya comin'. They're ready to make your wallet start jumpin' out of your pocket onto the counter like a fresh caught flounder in a fryin' pan. Money, money everywhere.
edzzed 06-27-2005, 11:11 PM i had my pump replaced under warranty, it showed a 1216 code which is pmd failing. they wanted to clean my tank and new fuel filter to which i said no these were not a causal effect. therefore they are not going to be replaced or cleaned. they agreed but grudgingly. it comes down to why your pump is failing. chances are if you grumble they will not force the issue but next time chevy will disallow any warranty on your pump for it. just speaking from what they told me.
DieselPro 06-27-2005, 11:13 PM null CLEAN filter housing out! No crud in the bottom. Give them your complaints and stress the truck stalls without warning because that is why their warranty has been extended. If they want to start adding surcharges take it somewhere else. This should be a no charge repair. When their through, inspect their work. Some tend to leave quite a few brackets off. Make sure receipts show mileage. Verify they are putting a new pump on and not a rebuild.
Wonder if the new replacement has a warranty?
nickg 06-28-2005, 12:40 AM A good friend of mine works at a local GM dealership and if I recall correctly he says that as soon as they (mechanic) tell the warrenty people that there is metal in the filter housing, the warrenty folks give the go ahead to install a new pump. other wise he said the warrenty folks make them check/test/clean stuff to ensure the pump is shot before they will replace it. so the techs at this dealership just tell warrenty that the filter has metal in it just so they dont have to jump thru hoops. I'll call him tomorrow to confirm this is what he told me
BTW I have 2 of these pumps that were changed under warrenty.
I've never checked but I thought he said fuel is returned to the tank thru the filter??
Turbine Doc 06-28-2005, 01:14 AM Nick yours is the exception rather than the rule, evidently you have a good dealer, not many of those these days.

chickenhunterbob 06-29-2005, 09:58 AM Conventional wisdom, not from personal experience but from those who have been through this, on other boards and such, is to show up at the dealer with clean fuel, a clean filter bowl, new filter, working OPS and lift pump. This give the dealer no reason to suspect gasoline, water in fuel, dirty contaminated fuel for the cause of IP failure, which may be sufficient for them to deny warranty coverage. Also, prevents them from replacing your OPS, lift pump, steam cleaning tank etc. at 125 bucks an hour shop rate. Have a code indicating pump failure, compain about rough running, stalling or whatever, be within the mileage and time parameters, and you should give no legitimate reason to deny coverage. what the heck is "null"
