I'll get to the facts:
I have a K&N 77 Series Intake
Just bought a LBZ mouthpiece

I have to cut my intake to obviously make the mouthpiece fit and I'm ok with that. However, my MAF sensor is a little bit close to where the silicon boot is going to be.
Here is a pic of it:

Now this cut is going to be around the area of that weld. Is this to close to the MAF? I don't want to cut this and then have all sorts of codes thrown, and I know it's hard to make that determination by just looking at a picture but I figured you guys who have made your own home made intakes and what not could chime in and give your opinion. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

One more question. I've read countless threads about filters/intakes. Believe me I wish I still had my stock one but I don't. I've had this K&N filter since 2006 and I clean it religiously. Never over oiled, and I give it plenty of time for the oil to "soak" in. However when I tore about my intake tube, I was alarmed at the amount of grime inside. I read Spicers test with all the filters and everyone else's comments. Seems K&N isn't that great and AFE is way better, at least by 2.5% for FILTERING. I don't care about flow--- I'm just concerned with filtering since my tube looks horrible on the inside. With that said, I'm going to put an AFE dry filter in place of the K&N. I read several places that AFE actually designed their filter for a diesel engine where as K&N didn't. Is this true? Anyhow I'm starting on this project this afternoon and I'll post pics of the install. Thanks for any input guys.

Also I'm not trying to open a new can of worms with filter debating or LBZ mouthpiece performance. All I'm concerned with is:
-Cutting of the intake tube
-Putting a dry filter in place of an oiled one.

Thanks again!
-Steve

I don't see the MAF being a problem. The MAF is far enough up stream of any change in diameter that it will not effect the readings.

K&N vs aFe....sorry, can't help ya there.

I kinda figured it would be ok, second opinion always helps. I'll probably end up doing this tomorrow since it's raining now  I"ll post pics though when I'm through/

It'll be just fine right there :thumb:

Dry filter > Oiled filter (regardless of brand....)

All that grime you saw wouldn't be there with a Dry filter :thumb:

and all that grime can damage a MAF sensor

I called up K&N and asked them what the I.D. was of this specific intake tube. They told me, 3 5/8". Didn't think it would be a problem for a 4"x4" connector to work since everyone else has been using them. I get all this taken off of my truck and can immediately tell this isn't so. I grabbed my O.D. tape, measured and the O.D. mind you -- is 3 7/16" minus whatever the thickness of the tube is....... I grabbed the lbz mouthpiece and it swallowed the intake tube. I know I can get a silicon reducer (3.5" to 4") but this intake tube is tiny!!!! So IMO, it doesn't make sense to install the mouthpiece. I've read as many of the lbz mouthpiece threads as I could. I know the stock intake tube is bigger. I looked around at some of the other intake tubes from other companies and they are way bigger. S&B has a 5" tube:eek:. Anyhow, I make just order a intake tube for an LBZ and get the re-flash get a tube for an LLY that's bigger. This project is on hold again.....

Wow, why would K&N make the tube smaller?:confuzeld:

That sucks that you have to spend more money to get it right.

LBZ S&B + LBZ MP make for a good combo. Dustin (OTHRGRL) got quite the HP gain from swapping from stock to S&B. Mind you that he was over 500hp before the S&B, so "results not typical".

I don't think K&N actually designed these for diesel engines IMO. Beats me, I do know I got stiffed back in 06 when I bought this damn thing. Around 350$
