: hooking into cargo lamp switch

Going to mount some rear lamps under the bumper so i can back out of my driveway, on the driveway, and not on the grass at night.

I have read most of the info here on doing it, and think I could wire into the trailer power with a relay quite easily, but I would instead like to turn them on and off with the cargo lamp switch, which seems pretty logical.

So... I would like to connect a relay to the cargo lamp button somehow?

Anyone have any details on what the best way to do this? I imagine the cargo lamp has a relay under the hood somewhere I could jimmy a wire to and run to the back? not the best solution, but good enuf.

I was hoping the camper wiring package would include an alternate cargo lamp relay connection, but dont think so.

or I could hook it up the CHMSL and tap my breaks a few times on the way out...:coolnana:

Or you could hook it up to your reverse lights........ just sayin......

Too easy..... I need a challenge. but, for real, I don't want them to come on when I am backing up at the grocery store and other places where I am trying to appear classy.

Well I don't see why you couldn't hook it up to the cargo light switch then :thumb:

Oh and the problem with hooking it to the CHMSL would be blinding the drivers behind ya every time you hit your brakes :p:

Yeah, but where'd the best place to do that be? Under the hood somewhere, behind the button in the dash? Somehow on the way to the cargo lamp?

Toggle switch that is how I have mine.

I'd tap into the dash switch for the cargo lamp. Saves you from finding a place to mount another toggle switch. I mounted a toggle switch and an orange LED in the dash to indicate my rear flood lights are on. No cargo lamp switch on the Suburban. Having the extra light while hooking up trailers or loading boats in the dark is wonderful.

alternatively, anyone know where I can get an OEM looking switch to go in one of them empty little squares that have a blank cover by where the airbag switch is? That would be really cool as well. I think that is where they put a marker lamp switch.

Or does someone know the part number for this handy looking device....

I know it is part of the snowman prep pack, but just want the button....

I am glad I called the dealer who said... uggghhh nope nothing ever goes there... I suppose he forgot this and the PTO switch which I also stumbled upon.

The switch in question (roof beacon) has to run a trigger to the BCM, and can get rather complicated.

couldn't i just cut the cords coming out of it and use it? or is it really not a "switch". assuming I have the relay for the roof lights, or could get it I suppose I could wire to that.

don't know how the beacon switch works but most of the switch on the dash are momentary switch to ground that acts as toggle to tell the BCM to do something. So no it won't be as easy as hooking it up to something else. But it would be possible to build a circuit that would make it work for your purpose.

might want to do a search for "bed lights" or "lamps"

I hooked some rope light under the bed rail to come with the cargo light. I connected it through the mbec, and it comes on with the cargo lights.

awesome.. thanks everyone... I can spend days searching here and still not find just the right posts..... Might be time to light the bed, the toolbox, maybe throw some lights under the nerf bars...

breaking news... UFO spotted going down highway GA 400. green with black wheels and lit up like the 4rth of july.

rear lamps in. get on the wiring later today.

I did this on my 02, now my cargo light turns on every white light on the back of the truck. And I have aux light under the bumper for reverse lights. So if someone runs there brights behind me, I can bright light them back, from the rear. My cargo light switch was a switchable ground, meaning the cargo light always has power to it, and the switch just connects the ground. So I wired up a relay and the ground of the relay hooked into this wire. So whenever it was conected the relay is tuned on by the ground

where did you wire up the relay?

Ender06
03-28-2010, 04:12 PM
the relay is under the hood, just ran a wire thru the fire wall to the switch. then one to the reverse wire and two from power(one for main power, one for the switched power since the ground is the switch on this)

btw, it works absolutely GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! I love this mod, and I'm a relay nut, i use them for tons of stuff on my truck, and do all my own wireing and tinkering

just to be clear right, quick, you added a new wire, from the cargo switch at the dash to the ground on a new relay you put on the hood.

does this help?? sorry for the 3 year old drawing, just trying to make it simple. I will have to look and see witch wire it was on the back of that swich, some are for the cargo some for the fog

Thanks, yeah, I have been over that thread, and the other, you just commented on, a few times. That is how I now know what an midbec is... now just what do to with it... different story...

JFYI you can tie into the Blue/white wire in slot "F"(far left in pic) of the cargo light switch, and follow the above diagram except 87 goes to your aux lights. I used 2 55w Walmart lights $20. Slot "F" is hot with 12v until button is pushed, than it drops to 0v.

I positive mine DID NOT have a hot wire outta the cargo light switch that powered it on. But mine is a 2002, and earlier models used alot of Negative switches on them. Might be the difference in year models. Oh, you are right on the 87 to aux lights. I ordered a set from eBay, just like the wal mart ones, and have them mounted below the bumper also

This was the best example i found after 2 days of searching, from there i just had to break out the old multimeter and start testing.

Thanks for the help bud!

I ended up connecting at the mid-bec, with the fancy connectors per some of the other discussions on here. there is not much extra wire down there so it was a little nerve racking to cut the existing connector off and then put the new one on, etc. but it works great.

I found most of the treads on reverse, bed, cargo lights. The Midbec and upfitter stuff just made the job worse.

My little pea cant handle all that!:D
