First off let me say that this is a great site.
Here is my story. I currently drive a 1989 ford reg cab gasser, and needless to say it is time for a new truck.
I have done some research and I think I am gonna get a 2003 - 2004 GMC - Chevy D/A ex-cab short bed. Over the weekend I looked at two one was a 2004 GMC and the other was a 2003 Chevy. Both identical except the GMC had the tow mirrors and a couple of scrathes and had 25,025 miles. The 2003 Chevy was immaculate and had 32000 miles. I could have either one for around $29000. Now to my questions- The GMC sounded much quiter than the Chev why could this be? I believe they both have the LB7 motor.
are there any major differences in the two trucks? what was changed between 2003- 2004?

I am also looking at a 2004 GMC with 30000 on it for $29999 and it looks very clean. I personally like the headlight style on the GMC a little better
but will live with a Chev if a good deal comes along.

Thanks in advace for any input!

Get the VIN#'s and post them in the

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=71

Vin Checks Requests so you will know the History..........

Then once you know the history you will be in a better position to negotiate the price.

I have heard dealers are LOWBALLING the trades they get so you probably have a few thousand $$$$$$ to negotiate the price.

I think you will be Happy with any of the trucks you listed. I would suggest you do a car fax to check the history or ask a stealer to run the vin. Another thought is to check out new with the current sale and new car loans lower then used you may spend the same $ and get a new truck with a full warranty.

With all the "deals" on GM pricing going on, it might pay to do some serious negotiations on a new unit, outright buy. May only be a few more bucks and get zero mile vehicle.

to answer your question, look under both trucks at the exhaust pipes for comparison. check to see if the noisy truck still has a muffler. the trucks should sound the same unless someone has modified the exhaust system.

Jason,

Are you sure they both have LB7 engines? The LLY has a cat. coverter and that will make the engine quieter. The non Calif. LB7 trucks do not have a cat.

The VIN number will tell you if it is an LB7 or LLY. Count to the 8th digit, starting from the left. A 1 is a LB7, a 2 is a LLY.

The only other thing I can think of is one has a modified exhaust.

My 03 listed at $39.6K, with discounts I got it for a little over $ 29K. I think you might be better off to look for a new one.
