Looking at a 2003 8.1 Allison at a local dealer.
Has everything I need... Even the right color. 37k one owner...
Only thing is... I dont need it for 2-3 months.
Seems like Dmaxs are more common.
Will I find another?

Ok, don't laugh. I was shopping on the AutoZone website for a belt for my "new" Dmax. When I input the vehicle, it gave percentages of 2500HDs with different motors. This is what it showed:
8 Cylinder Engines.......8 Cylinders 364 U 6.0L SFI (http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?UseCase=Y001&UserAction=processEngine&Parameters=%7C%7E8+Cylinders+364+U+6.0L+SFI%7C%7E2 003%7C%7EGMC+TRUCK%7C%7ESIERRA+2500HD+4WD&PageSync=8).................. 40 %

I see one now and then, but most have either the 6.0 or 6.6 Duramax in them. Go to CarMax and do a search, that is how i found mine. 01Duramax6speed is very correct when he says they are thirsty, mine likes to pull into the gas station everytime it sees one! The best i have got so far was on a trip this last weekend to go Trout fishing, right at 230 miles one way and it took almost 17 gallons to fill it up, which puts it right at 13.5 mpg. Driving around town it is a little below that. Gas milage is not a consideration to me when i buy a truck though, got other vehicles for that.

My '01 8.1 ext cab dually ally best it ever got was 10.6 mpg. Most of the time it was under 10 in town. They're not very common, but have the best power outta the box that I've ever seen in a truck.

until july 5 i'd imagine you could get a brand new 8.1 for a lot cheaper than 37, no matter what options you wanted. i base this on the fact that a new reg cab (6.0 so add $850 for 8.1) 3500 base model is 23k with employee discount as per gmc website.

8.1 seems to be the forgotten engine. Dad has 04 ecsb with 6.0 and I tell him I have twice the engine and three times the tranny he has. AND I get almost same fuel mileage he gets, about 1 mpg less, AND mine is CCLB, lifted with 35's on it, tics him off when I do that.
PS..... AND my 02 looks a LOT better than his 04, least from the front
Motojay,
I don't know exactly what you are looking for but I have a 2001 chevy 2500HD with the 8.1 and allison the truck is fully loaded with only 31,000 miles on it. I will be selling it in a few weeks.
