I noticed today that my oil gauge fluctuates from 40lbs to 80lbs as I drive. My old 1500 never did this. Is this normal for a diesel or do I have a problem?

As long as it's fluctuating with the RPM accordingly as in more RPM more PSI.

If not !

Ya what Mack said

Oil psi goes up and down with rpm up to a point.

If your pressure is going up and down at a steady rpm then you may have problems.

Could be a bad sending unit or guage cluster.

Best bet is to get a mechanical guage on temporarily to double check.

Normal for a diesel or any engine with a decent Oil Gage, whether mechanical or electrical.

Most OEM gasser oil gages or damped so much, they just stay fairly constant. In addition, the gassers usually have a lower oil pressure and volume.

Remember your oil pump on the Dmax has to not only provide cooling and lubrication to a large crankshaft, rods, and roller valve train, but also provide piston cooling spray for the pistons.

That is a fairly common arrangement on a diesel.

It looks like GM chose a little different path with the Duramax. Instead of running half the oil over the relief valve at idle they chose to increase volume and pressure as the engine speeds up. I don't know exactly what they changed. The local Techs are going to let me take a look at a pump if they ever get one. This saves a little HP and heat. Later! Frank
