have 2500hd duramax/allison. Went for 3800 mile trip about 900 miles into trip came out from snack stop saw fluid under truck checked and tranny covered and dripping. Started truck and checked level it was way overfilled. Everything on the guages seemed to be ok. Figured it would just blow out if any left and continnued on. On the return leg about 2500 miles into noticed when I decelerated and then accelerated that their was a lag and then a jerk. Best way I can think of describing it is similiar to an old manual when the gears in drive line get real worn and their is a lot of lag between the engine and wheels. This has continnued. It was still going up through the gears smoothly and down shifting normally. When starting with cold oil the lag is hardly noticeable, but as the oil warms up the lag becomes obvious. Took to dealership that serviced trans they said they did some adjusting and that because of the learning trans I should drive it for a couple of days. I should mention I have the Edge Juicer on the duramax. Since driving I have noticed harder shifting between 2 and 3rd gear and motor has been hard to start. It would turn over and not fire, after several attempts and waiting it would start. The last time out after being hard to start the motor warning light came on, drove for a few miles turned off went to wedding came back started ok and engine light did not come on.. Finally my question Will the overfilling of a transmission and the subsequent 3800 miles of running it cause pemanent damage? Can the adjustment mean I am just closer to a new transmission. With all the complexities of the new computer trans how can you tell if the dealer is shooting straight with you? HELP...HELP...HELP I need to return to dealership armed with info.

PM Mike L., but I would first drain some of the oil and get the level right.

What year truck? I'm wondering when it was over filled.
When the transmission gets hot the fluid will expand.I have filled mine to much in the past (near or above cold mark) only to find it vent some.IMO not good but with in reason no damage should occur.I'm talking in a quart range.
Adjustment?
There are no adjustments mechanically but only electronically be resetting all garage taps or by resetting individual shift tap cells. The Allison is a adaptive learn electronically controlled transmission.Perhaps they reset some or all your taps that is why it is a bit quirky as it's relearning the values to give your coverage or a clean shift at different throttle positions taking in your driving characteristics. The Juice box will also take some time too for the transmission to readjust.Best to leave it on one setting.
If you haven't serviced the fuel system ,once again not knowing mileage and year, perhaps you have a partially clogged fuel filter which may cause truck to light slower.Or some bad fuel.
The Edge Juice box also could effect this as you might have a older version and this has been addressed.Look on the bottom of the box and post the version. Those running the box will tell you if you have the newest version,I have lost track.
Since you threw a ses light I have to assume you might have a fuel delivery issue although as i mentioned.Did you or can you retrieve the code? This would help in diagnosing the problem your having.
Good luck

Thanks for info! Heres some additional info.. it is a 2003 with 42k miles. The service has all been performed by selling dealership. The overfill occured as best I can determine when it had the 36k service work which included a tranny filter. I left on trip around 38k miles. The couple thousand miles short driving showed no oil spots in driveway. The oil level was about 4 inches above the high hot mark when hot. When I took into the dealer for repair they corrected oil level. Just returned from short drive into town for breakfast 7 miles each way and no light and no problem starting. Seemed to shift fine but still had the lag. The lag was not real noticeable but did not have much time for oil to heat up. Could too low engine rpm cause a lag on acceleration mine is about 600rpm. The lag occurs most noticeable by slowing and then accelerating, like coming up on a slower vechicle and then passing without kicking down into passing gear. It is a split second delay and then a thud (mild clunck) when you let off the accelerator quickly you can feel it do the same thing. If it wasn't worse as it warmed up I would assume it to be drive line rear end slop.
Why is it, it always happens two thousand miles out of warrenty?

Four inches above is a good two quarts plus what bleeded off.No matter you have it documented so if something should go wrong it would be the dealers problem.
The sluggish shifts cold and still could be from you removing the Juice box and what ever "adjustments" that were made by the dealer. Also the Allison will need a lil wake up (warming time) before it shifts better in the morning.Specially when you run a Power enhancer. The TCM is expecting more power than the ECM will deliver.
I would just drive it normal as you would do with the Juice box on the setting you like, let it learn. Most likely a lower setting on the Juice as your probably just looking for a edge.Allow the Transmission to adjust.Could take quite a few up and down shifts. The RPM at idle has nothing to do with the lag it's pretty much the nature of the transmission when you coast and then apply throttle.Again this could be a bit more enhanced do to the resent service.
Give it time
Apparently the removal of the Edge box fixed the slow start ,as you removed for service? Or did they change the Fuel Filter?
Couldn't get the code I gather?

IIRC the newest Edge is 4.81
Clay10,
My 04.5 with the Edge on level 2 does the same thing you are describing. When slowing down to make a turn (like at a light), then accerating it sometimes takes a bit to find the gear. Doesn't happen all the time and it seems to happen within the 10-15 mph range. I just attributted it to the Edge chip, especially since edge doesn't come on until around 180* coolant temp - ie. doesn't happen until it is warmed up. I figure even though I leave the Edge set to level 2 all the time, the tranny is still constantly trying to figure out the added power - not there when its cold, there when warmed up. It might be interesting to set the Edge on level 0 and see if it still happens.
As far as the overfill, one of the tranny wizards will have to answer. When I had my filter changed the dealership didn't prefill the new filter so I was a bit low. I added some so now I am right at the top of the Hot mark when the gauge reads ~190* (stop/go traffic).

Checked the edge it is version 4.73i dont know how that is age wise but its been in about 1 and 1/2 years or 24k miles. Sounds like I don't need to panic just yet. Mackin, kbk and dozerboy appreciate the input.. Thanks again

My truck has 17,000 mi. I was gettign hot tranny temops and the LOPE SHIFT off accelerationa s well.... COme over a speed bump or come to a turn to coast threw it and it would seem to go into Neutral and miss for a second....
Went to flush my tranny and it had 3.5 quarts to much fluid in it!!!! I was averageign temps unloaded at 85* outside runnign 70 MPH of 195-205 *... Today at 94* ouside I ran 160* running 75 mph for 2 hrs. straight....
100% AMSOIL dropped me about 35* with the proper amounts... Slip shifting at low speed is GONE COMPLETELY, Truck shifts better than new runs Level 3 and 4 and 5 on the edge for 2 weeks now shifts better than ever....
BIG:cool:
Hmm. Sounds like I need to double check my fluid level and make sure I am not too full.
Today running 75 mph on the freeway with an outside temp around 80* the tranny gauge was right around 160-170*. I usually see the higher temps with city stop/go traffic or if it is really hot out - 90*+. I will try and see if the funny slow down/accelerate tranny thing only happens at the higher tranny temps.

I'd look into it!!!
Excellent. Thanks BigWill_21
