Been stored in a barn for the last decade. Belongs to my father-in-law. Am getting it in running shape again. He claims 25+mpg. 4 speed manual. 1983 model.

Sweet looking truck. You shouldn't have any trouble getting 25 mpg out of it. I had an 84 Suburban C20 (much heavier) that got 24 mpg on a regular basis. You're lucky to have the 4 speed. I have the 700R4, which was rebuilt three times during the 12 years I owned it.

is the 4 speed a SM465(L,1,2,3 gear pattern) or does it have the rare NP833(1,2,3,OD pattern)? also is it a 4x4 or just a 2wd?

That's a good question and I'm glad you asked. I have no idea about the tranny.

It is 2WD, and the truck is in overall very good shape. It has always been stored indoors. It has just been sitting since about Y2K. I plan on getting it running this spring.

Does anybody know what happens to diesel fuel when it sits?

i didnt think anything happened to dieselfuel. since i had a tractor full of fuel that sat for 12 years, then i gave it a sniff of ether and the ol bugger fired up and run just like the day it was new. (dont ever give a 6.2 ether, only use glowplugs)

im not sure id run 10 yr old fuel, but i ran 3 year old fuel just fine

id pull that tank and clean it out if i were you, and probrably install some new fuel lines as well, good chance they will leak anyhow

I agree on cleaning the tank. If not it might be a good idea to dump some biocide in there, just to err on the side of caution.

As for the transmission, the pattern should be printed on the shifter knob in either order 4320diesel had mentioned. If it's not and you feel like crawling under to look at it, the SM465 is a beefy toploading webbed hunk of iron, whereas the NP833 is a sideloader of the sort you'd find in a car.

Welcome to Diesel Place.....:coolnana::pimp:

That is a really nice truck....:cool:

Dropping the fuel tank is a very good idea. The fuel lines if showing any major signs of rust/rot should be replaced, as air leaking into the fuel system will cause starting and running issues.....:eek:

Might want to check the brake lines at same time.... they all run along side of each other.:)

I have another thread on another forum going also so I forgot some information. The plan is to actually replace the present fuel tank with a new one, purge the old fuel out, change all the fluids (oil, water/radiator, fuel, etc), change all filters, and possibly remove the glow plugs for the first motor spin or two. Possibly even spray some extra oil in the cylinders and let the fuel purge out the glowplugs.

Nothing concrete yet, still in planning stages. Got some other legwork to do before attempting this. I heard the glowplugs may be difficult to get out, especially on one cylinder.

I bet it has the NP833 being a C10. Especially if it got 25 MPG.
Definitely a SWEET truck, I'd love to have something like that for a DD. Don't see too many stepside 6.2s.

i wish i could see someone else that had a NP833 4x4 6.2. so far ive never seen another one like mine. all the NP833 trucks were 2wd. and i know mine is factory since the console on the floor is factory.
