: Is an "ADDITIONAL" fuel pump needed with the Nicktane Filter Kit? - Follow up

I'm anxiously awaiting UPS delivery of my new Nicktane Fuel Filter Kit but forgot to ask a critical question.... It an additional fuel pump needed to have the Nicktane Kit work properly or is the existing truck fuel pump sufficient to do the job? (even when towing a 14,000 lb trailer?)

:help:

Since the original posting date, I've received and installed the Nicktane Kit... inatallation went very smoothly & the truck ran well during the post installation driving test..

FOLLOW UP QUESTION - July 1, 2005...

But, I've also read on other diesel forums that other diesel engines that use the Bosch injection systems have another fuel lift pump to assist the engine fuel pump. They say with only one pump, the OEM fuel pump is put under undue load - stress/strain. What do you all think ?? :help2:

Any recommendations on quality lift pump vendors and should they be installed before or after the Nicktane Filter Kit?

:help2: again. Thanks!

No............at least my truck never needed one.........

It is however a good idea to pressurize the filters as only 1/3 of the filter will get used otherwise.

Make sure the lift pump you buy will still allow fuel to pass through if it fails...........if not you need to plumb a bypass in.

lift pumps are not required for the kit to function properly. they surely don't hurt, but aren't necessary.

How do you pressurize the filter?

if you put a lift pump before it, the pump will pressurize the filter and everything after it up to the CP3 injector pump. bosch's design calls for a lift pump. gm decided it wasn't necessary. as i said before the kit works fine without one but they sure don't hurt anything. they help if you're trying to make big horsepower for sure.

 Diesel Power - could you give me a recommendation or two as to what type/Mfgr. of lift pump you might recommend for a purely stock Duramax in a trailer towing application?

Also - is there a maximum input pressure spec. for fuel pressure into the OEM stock fuel pump assembly?

Thanks.

a single lift pump would be fine if you aren't trying to make big horsepower. there are several good ones out there so i'd hate to start a war. i run the TTS pump setup on mine and it works well. i've also ran the super diesel pump setup and it worked great too. those are the only two i've used in conjunction with my filter kit.

i don't remember what racor rates the bursting pressure at of the OEM filter. i believe its somewhere in the 15-20PSI range but i may be wrong. i know its way under 30psi.

I've run the Nicktane almost since my truck was new. I've never had any problems that would be cured by a lift pump running the Juice on 5/5 or the Pred on 120. I only run into problems that a lift pump would help solve to a point when I stack the two. You shouldn't need one.

Good thread. I just got the Nicktane a couple weeks ago and was waiting to ask the same question B4 install. Now I can go for it.

I did a Nicktane install today. I don't like how the filter block hits the fill tank hose. The block has a sharp edge on it. Has anyone else had this issue? How does the painted steel hold up? I am thinking of having mine linexed.

the bracket isn't painted, its powdercoated. did you install your bracket backwards? i'm asking as the filter head is behind the deflector plate so it couldn't hit the filter neck unless it was installed backwards.

It is on backwards. I thought the deflector plate was to keep debris from the rear tire off the filter. Ohh well. I might leave it and rig up a bracket to bolt on around the bottom of the filter. I'll post pics when I get it finished. Thanks for the quick response Nick.

glad you got it figured out!
