To install a brake control on my truck (in signature) is it as simple as plugging the harness that is in my glove box and came with the truck to the controller and to the fuse box under the dash? Am I leaving something out? Seems too simple.
Thanks

Thats it! It will take all of five minutes if you are slow.

One question. Mine has a plug for the truck end, but just wires on the end that would go into the controller. Where can I get the plug for that end?

That is end is to be spliced into the brake controller wires, there usually isn't a plug. If you get a controller like the Prodigy or possibly others, it is possible to get a new harness that has plugs on both ends.

Cheapest- splice the wires and plug into truck
Quickest- get controller with plug in harness for both ends

Hope that helps.

guess i will splice them together. i thought i could find a plug that i could put on the factory harness, but nowhere sells just that part, you have to buy the whole thing.

IIRC, There is also a fuse in the under hood elec center on driver's side that needs to be installed to provide accessory 12v power (i.e. to charge trailer batteries etc) through the 7-pin plug at rear of truck. The fuse should be included with the factory wiring harness and needs to be installed to provide accessory 12v at plug. Lights, brakes, etc. will work without it but I figured it out when my break away elec brake controller would not recharge until I installed the fuse.

Somewhere directions tell you you don't need it if you have optional 2nd battery, but that is refering to the gas engine option of a totally separate 12v battery for accessories, not the dual 12v parallel system that the DMax requires.

Good luck I bought the harness with the prodigy plug already installed for like $9 or so a while back and it makes the install a five minute or less deal, nice and clean and better terminations than my splicing can produce..

Do you know what that fuse slot under the hood is labled?

It's stud 1 at the top left if your looking from driver's side. There is probably a red dummy fuse in its place now.

There are harnesses available with a plug on both ends. What brand controller?

tEkonsha. At least the prodigy and p3.

If you want to clean up the wiring and not have splices you can get a harness for the Tekonsha controllers that will plug in at both ends. They're super cheap.

Another question. I installed it today, but it stays on. I wired it to the harness the way it instructed, I plugged it into the 2nd slot under the dash, but with no key in ignition it stays on. Any suggestions?

I don't have one, but plan on getting a prodigy brake controller. I believe I recall reading a post asking the same question. I believe the prodigy controller light stays on for 15min after vehicle is shut off. So shut vehicle off and check it 20 min later and see if it is still on.

I have the prodigy. Mine turns off eventually. Not sure how long it takes...

Tekonsha calls it the battery saver feature. After so long of no activity, its shuts down.

Thanks all. I checked and it is off. It did take a while, that's why I thought it was staying on.

did you put your foot on the brakes? If I remember right mine looks like it is off when I get in the truck and stays that way till I apply the brakes.

Mine does not light unless I have a trailer plugged in with brakes. I think I have a voyager.

I have the Voyager and it is the same way as Cowboyjer's.

I drove the truck tonight. My prodigy stayed off when I unlocked the truck, and then started the truck. Once I put my foot on the brake then I got 2 small red LED dots lighting up on the display.

^^^^^^^^^^
Two small LED lights indicate it is powered up and in boost mode with nothing hooked up at 7pin plug. Sounds like you got it wired right.

Hey guys. I just got a Hopkins brake controller for my truck and the harness for the truck didnt come with the fuse I need to get power to the controller. Where can I get a fuse? Mine has the red dummy fuse in slot 1. Slot one is where I put the fuse? What size fuse also? Thanks guys.

Shouldn't need the fuse for power to the controller if all is wired right, the fuse sends 12v accessory power back to the 7-pin plug at rear of truck to charge trailer batteries, break away brake batteries, etc.

If you are plugged in and wired correctly to teh under dash power console to the upper left of brake pedal, you should at least get power at teh controller unit.

can anyone tell me what amperage fuse i need to put in there, i bought my truck 2nd hand and it does not have the fuse installed, just the red-dummy.

The dummy fuse is for the trailer charge 12v. If you're plugged in and NOT working, perhaps you have the harness from the wrong year? Two wires would need transposed, if you have the harness from the wrong year.

here's what you see if you pull off both covers for the underhood fuse box:
http://devlab.dhs.org/public/IMG_6809.jpg

The big GREEN box shows where this fuse is located.
Pull out the big red dummy fuse and put in a 40A fuse and you'll get power to the + terminal on the 7-way connector.
http://devlab.dhs.org/public/IMG_6810.jpg

the spot for the dummy fuse (Post #1) is not just for trailer breakaway charger, it is also for any aux powered stuff on the trailer, ie: interior switched lights.

whether i'm plugged in or not i have zero volts to the + terminal on the 7-way. but everything else works on the trailer when plugged in. when i swap the dummy fuse for a real fuse, i get power to that terminal.

HTH for anyone else looking into this.
