: Is this a good deal?
cgrubb1 03-07-2010, 10:45 PM 1998, Kubota L3600, 38.5hp, 521hrs., 31 pto hp, 581 loader. $10,000? Looking for a tractor. Mostly to scrape snow, level out drive, light logging for firewood, light farm use. Seems to be in great shape but wasn't sure If this was a good deal or not.
Thanks

Depending on what you need, want or have room for. You can get a 100+ hp Case or other non-green for about half that. You could also find a nice used skid loader for that money.
That said. That sounds a tad high to me for a 12 year old garden tractor. Do they have a blue book for garden tractors?
mx2702001 03-08-2010, 11:06 AM A bit old age wise low hours though i bet you could find somthing else newer for same money look at all the brands in that HP range Usually tractors with loaders will bring a good price skid steer are nice but if you want to be able to change and pull implements and so on its a better to buy a tractor
thejdman04 03-08-2010, 01:22 PM seems high to me there are places online to look at tractors and get an idea of prices such as tractor house.
cgrubb1 03-08-2010, 04:25 PM i thought it seemed a bit high too, but the comparable ones i have seen online seem to be more. they are either a couple years older at same price or a couple years newer and 13-16k. i want to get a pretty common brand for part and repair purposes, but i know this will be a little more expnesive.

IMO, that depends on some things:
- Has it been well maintained, and are service records available?
- Has it been kept in a garage or shed?
- Is the local Kubota dealer good to deal with if you need service or parts?
- Do you plan on any serious/hard loader work, or brush-hogging? If so, more power may be a good idea.
- Is this your first tractor, and will others be using it aside from you? If so, a hydrostatic trans is probably a good idea, and worth a couple of bucks. For a more experienced operator, a 40+ HP utility tractor with gear transmission may make more sense. These have fewer bells and whistles and are often cheaper. Case/IH, Ford/New Holland, Massey Ferguson are among good brands that aren't high priced. Deere is for many the 'gold standard', but usually sells for more.
The L3600 is a good compact tractor suitable for, as you say, 'light farm use'. I don't think you could go wrong with it. If this tractor in great shape, the age is not so important. If you can get a sound, well maintained machine for $8,000 or $9,000 - that's a really good deal. In our part of the Northeast, these prices don't surprise me. Right or wrong, Deere and Kubota compacts cost the most and hold their value best, in these parts. It may be different in your area. Check out Fastline on-line or in books, say at Tractor Supply, for used equipment price ranges.
John Deere makes similar tractors that are also very good. So do C/IH & Massey Ferguson (red). Ive heard some complaints about the later New Holland 'Boomer' compacts, but the earlier Ford/New Holland (blue) have a good rep.
I have a Kubota L4630, bought new in 2003. It's my first tractor and I've been happy with it. Not a lot of hours, but it gets worked pretty hard. I also looked at Deere, but they were more money in this part of the woods.
cgrubb1 03-09-2010, 09:42 PM it seems to be in good shape. Low hours and has been kept in a shed. I have never owned a tractor but have driven others quite a bit. I don't care for the hydrostatic trans. They seem a little weak. I would like one a bit bigger, just to cover all my bases, but the prices are a little more than I can afford. There is a kubota place about 10 mins away from me. I like JD but I think you pay for the name.

cgrubb1,
Take a look at the listings on this link. Unless asking prices are really different in your area, I think you may have a good deal. There are some good machines with over 1,000 hours in your price range, most of them green. I've found it's hard to get bargains on good compact tractors; you tend get what you pay for.

Whereabouts do you live? Is the nearby Kubota dealer OK to work with?
Main question is: Will the L3400 have enough size and power for what you need to get done? Sure, the hydro robs power, but is great for loader work. We have friends with an L3400 with ag tires who use it for a small farm and are OK. It's not up to brush-hogging 6 foot high grass, pulling a 3 bottom plow, or digging foundation holes though.
I bought slightly bigger than I thought I'd need and was glad, but had to break the bank to do it. I do cut thick, tall pasture and do a fair bit of heavy digging. I ended up buying new, because there were very few good used machines in the 40 PTO HP range. [I checked the Fastline price range for my 570 - hour, 46 HP L4630, and it came up in the $12-14 K bracket.] It's depreciated about $4 to 6 K in 7 years. I'm planning on handing this tractor along to the kids, unless I win a big lottery ticket... A Deere would have been a couple of grand more in our area and would have depreciated about the same.
Keep us posted.
cgrubb1 03-14-2010, 12:25 PM So I looked at it and decided to take it. It's in great shape
with all service records. Been barn kept and should serve all the purposes I need. What do you think?
I will load pics later.
