: honing my 6.2L
detroitdiesel 03-06-2010, 11:36 AM Well i quite working on my engine over the winter, and am going to get started back on it soon. The first thing i am going to do is order some piston rings, then hone the bores. I am going to be using the 3 arm style, and was told to use a AFT/kerosene mix for honing oil. I am going to set the pressure on fairly low, and run it just enough to break the glaze so the new rings can set. Those are the first things i am going to do.
So, sound like a good enough procedure for honing?
Also, Is there any particular brand of piston rings i should order?
Diaric 03-06-2010, 12:19 PM should work, i've seen guys use gasoline or varsol. heres a good link

dieselolds 03-06-2010, 01:14 PM I read from a 7.3 international book from the early 90's that you should use a 120 rpm range with a variable drill motor and stroke up and down within the cylinder 12-15 times in 45 seconds. It's been awhile since I read that book but I think thats what it stated. Also make sure you scrub those cylinder walls well after honing.I use dishwashing liquid, clean water and a scotchbrite pad.Thats the only combination that will clean the cylinder walls completely.
dieselolds 03-06-2010, 01:18 PM If any grit is left in the cylinders, your new ring set won't last long so watch out for that.Use white shop towels to ensure each cylinder is completely grit free.If nothing shows up on the white shop towel after you scrub everything clean, you know your set to go.
Perfect circle is a nice piston ring brand and so is total seal.Sealed power and hastings are also nice ring sets.
detroitdiesel 03-06-2010, 01:41 PM Thanks for the replys/suggestions.:thankyou2 I will probably get to honing this engine within the week. I will get some practice on a honda gx390 that needs honing as well.
By the way, how are your trucks running dieselolds?
dieselolds 03-06-2010, 05:55 PM Both trucks are running very well.No problems with either engine as we speak.I use the '93 chevy truck on a 160 KM commute 5 days a week with absolutely no problems.I'm using mobil 1 5W40 turbo diesel synthetic and it never uses any oil.I could not ask for any better.
How are things with your 5.7 diesel?
Your more than welcome for the help.
4320Diesel 03-06-2010, 07:55 PM good to see you back dieselolds! havnt heard from you in a while. glad to hear the 5.7's are still smoking and clattering along.
dieselolds 03-06-2010, 07:59 PM It's nice to be back.:)Been busy doing an ironworker program.Still have a few months left to go but i'm doing well.
No problems with the 5.7 engines.I must be lucky!.......lol.How are things with your 6.2?
4320Diesel 03-06-2010, 08:01 PM i got a pyro and cranked the fuel up so it smokes real good now. added twin alternators and made a turbomaster so i get around 8 psi boost but im gonna crank it up to 10 tomorrow. also removed the running boards so it looks wayyyy better. also new 31's didnt hurt anyone :D theres pics in the lifted trucks thread.
dieselolds 03-06-2010, 08:05 PM I would'nt mind cranking the fuel rate up on my '81 5.7 but we all know how fragile those olds engines are.I rebuilt the injection pump myself a couple of years ago but I did'nt alter the roller to roller setting.I left it untouched.
Nice mods upon your 6.2!Are you using a J code pump?
4320Diesel 03-06-2010, 08:07 PM nah just the stock C code pump. this summer i plan on buying a new DB2 4911 pump off of a mechanical 6.5 turbo truck. ill put it on this truck for a while then it will go on a 6.2 i plan to build up for a goal of around 250 RWHP.
dieselolds 03-06-2010, 08:09 PM Sweet!That'll keep your 6.2 well nourished for sure!.......lol!:)

lots of plans, not enough canola
4320Diesel 03-06-2010, 08:15 PM right now its bein a bit of a dog. in guessing the injectors and ip are worn fairly good since i have 279,000 km's on the original injectors and ip. the ip also has the hot start issue so its showing signs of wear.
4320Diesel 03-06-2010, 08:16 PM not enough canola, more like no canola. i do sell alot of greenfeed bales. those are a healthy source of income :D

The pump on my '81 engine has a ton of miles on it.It has serial number DB2825 PC3742 J.It's the pencil injected version. My father got that particular pump back in 1995 and he used it on his engine for many years and the truck was used day and night and then it needed a flex ring so I decided to rebuild it myself a couple of years ago.I found a new old stock pump on ebay and I gave that pump to my father and I decided to keep our old pump and rebuild it.I'm figuring it has at least 300,000K on the hydraulic head and rotor.Everything else inside the pump I replaced with new parts but it never has or had any hot hard starting problems. It still continues to operate just fine.I occasionally use fuel additives from time to time.
I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope the pump lasts for a long time to come...lol.:D
4320Diesel 03-07-2010, 11:37 AM how hard is it to completely rebuild a pump off of a 6.2? and how much does the kit cost?
dieselolds 03-07-2010, 08:25 PM It's not hard to rebuild them at all.If you buy many of the hard parts that you need, you can do a great job by rebuilding it yourself. The seal kit is around $10 and you need a new EID unit if yours is less than perfect, followed by new transfer blades and liner,a metering valve along with new cam shoes and cam rollers. Those are the parts I put in my pump and i've never had a problem. My pump though does not use the light load advance system like the 6.2 pump uses so you'll need to find out if your advance piston is scored along with the bore inside your pump housing and if it is scored, you'll of course need to have the bore reamed oversize to accept an oversize advance piston.
Have you had one of those pumps apart before? It's not hard to rebuild them at all.Very easy in fact.

Well mine has been running fine until recently. It has a failing injector, so if you hold it at a steady throttle the engine stumbles. I should get that fixed soon. Also, a few days ago one of the tranny coolant lines went right along the engine and the engine mount. It will be a pain to fix. other than that it has been fine. I might also might be getting another car almost identical to mine soon, and if i get it, some head studs and a turbo are in store for it.
