Does anyone here have any experience with the 6.4 fords? Especially with a manual tranny.

Since GM has left me without a stick shift option,I am thinking of going to the dark side. The local dealer is offering a good deal on a new f-250 EC/SB with a stick, but I keep hearing horror stories about the Ford mileage.

Trying to find someone with experience in one that can give an HONEST opinion on the pros and cons.

Thanks, Chris

If a manual is really what you want you better get it while you still can, word is that Ford with the release of the 6.7 in 2011 is no longer offering a manual either. Wonder how long before Dodge does the same thing?

All I know is that the 6.4 can be very quick with some good tuning and very little else.

Many of the 6.4 mileage woes come from the DPF and emissions/timing just like the LMM, if you dont care about the warranty you could get rid of the DPF with tuning and get some of the mileage back, just like the LMM.

The mileage on the 6.4 is around 14-15mpg empty. With the DPF delete it jumps about 4-5mpg, and with aftermarket tuning they can be very fast.

x2 on both posts above me.

dpf is your enemy if your looking for mileage. of course with a new truck being a FORD you will probably want to keep your warranty. yes, they can be very quick with just a few mods.

You are high!

My mom just bought one, the first day she had it with 98 miles on the clock the check engine light came on and back to the shop. Secondly, they average around 10mpg, my buddy just got his back from the dealership and hes averaging 10mpg bone stock.

there is a direct correlation between the number of motors a company has gone through and the quality of that motor. 7.3 was a good motor then there was 6.0, 6.4, and now scorpion. duramax has stayed 6.6 the whole time cause they did it right the first time. no need to change something that works great.

FWIW you asked and some have answered and been beaten up for it but I will answer as well.

I have had 2 Ford F250's, both with the 6.4L. Had a job1 truck for about 18K miles and now on my second which has about 16K miles. I was getting about 15 mpg in town and about 18-19 on the highway empty. Towing was about 12-13 depending on conditions and weight. With my current truck (job3) before tuning I was getting about the same but slightly better on the highway (maybe 1 -1.5 mpg) and about the same towing. After tuning I see 17-18mpg in town and have seen 22 mpg on the highway running around 70mph and those are hand calculated numbers over several tanks of fuel.

My numbers are wrong and my truck is junk according to those on this site and I am ok with that. It gets me where I need to be, has never been in the shop nor has it left me stranded on the side of the road.

I am happy with it and I guess that is all that matters.

You asked and I answered, hope that helps you.

Feel free to shot me a PM if you care to discuss further as just about anything on here posted will be obliterated with insults.

I had a friend with an F-450 and western hauler bed getting 10mpg before the DPF came off... but with that kind of weight a Dmax would have been getting the same or worse.:D

6.4 are proving to be more badass every day.
