i have an 04 3500 D/A 4x4 crew cab the engine compartment caught on fire , the service break light came on ,we pulled over and by the break booster and master cylander flames coming out i got the fire extinguisher and tried to put it out . when it ran out the fire started back up again , and then another guy came with an extinguisher and finally put it out . i think a wire we installed from the place where u jump it, back to rear a 4 guage wire that charged the battery in dump trailor , had it towed back to dealer, my helper went with tow truck driver and said the guy back in service dep was upset when he saw all the upgrades i did a 4 in cat back exhaust , an air raid intake and hypertech and larger tires , i couldnt install factory settings back in truck , my helper didnt take my side he sided in with gm . the guy at dealer was saying the biggger tires caused the rear to heat up to blow out one of the rear seals ive been waiting over a month for them to get that in , he was saying i changed all the factory settings thats what my helper was saying . so any advise would be helpfull for when i go to see the service guys at gm in person at the dealer where i bought it ?

the service break light came on , we pulled over , by the break booster and master cylander fire was coming up in that area , so i pulled out the fire extinguisher and emptied it then the flames started back up another person came running over with a fire extinguisher and it finally subsided, i sent my helper with the tow truck driver back to dealer , i had to go back to job sight to finish concrete . the customer drove me home my helper sided in with the people at dealer , it was my fault because i put bigger tires on and upgraded exhaust it changed factory settings and he told them about hypertech programmer that was on and he sided in with them . they told him my rear end was heating up because i went up to 235 85 16s , we thought the master cylander was leaking break fluid that caused fire , we installed a 4 guage wire where u put jumper cables ,go back to rear with golf cart connecter , to charge the battery in dump trailor we think it might of been that ,that caught on fire ?i couldnt put factory program back in cause it because wiring harness melted any suggestions when i go to dealer tomarro ?

Fire your helper.

Do not deal with that dealer anymore.

Remove what you can (performance wise) and take to another dealer.

Dont count on the one your at now being helpful.

I think i read of another member who had the same fire story as yours and I think it turned out to be a brake fluid leak onto the manifold and that started the fire and then it spread to the fuse box and wiring.

Your tires and exaust probablly have nothing to do with the fire, dealer is just looking for a easy execuse.

Rear heating because of 235 tires. Come on give me a break. Even if it did whats that got to do with a fire under the hood.

Check your add on 4 guage wire and see if it was burnt from the outside in or the inside out.

Good Luck and don't let them give you any BS.

And I think there's a TSB about some kind of check valve or something to do with the brake's on some truck's that nneded to be replaced.

Yep...If that joker was my helper, he and I would both be in the hospital right now...
..with a doctor trying to surgically remove my foot from his ass...
As the others have said, you're probably going to have to find a different dealer now as well.

Edit: I don't believe that any of your modifications could have caused that fire, so I think you should be able to get it fixed under warranty....

thank u for the good information , they had just replaced the break booster and master cylander a month ago , it was leaking again ,when im pulling a trailor and someone pulls out in front of me and i have to slam the breaks on ,it seems to start the leaking problem . ive had lots of problems with this truck its hurting my business its going to take them at least a month to fix it . and i know the 36 months 0r 35000 warenty bumper to bumper should cover it , but they probably wont i filed a claim i have gmac insurance i hope that will.

i think a wire we installed from the place where u jump it, back to rear a 4 guage wire that charged the battery in dump trailor ,

You said we?It's obvious you caused the fire Way does GM have to do with it?Warranty? I don't think so,that's what INSURANCE is for.Just hope they don't figure out what happened.

Maybe I'm missing something here

he was saying i changed all the factory settings thats what my helper was saying .

What factory settings could you have possibly changed?Gear ratio with tires?More air IN and exhaust OUT?Oh boy
Not to long ago someone posted a picture of a white dually fried right off the under hood electrical center.

Edit:I seen your other post and you had a Hyper-Tech tuner.Fire Helper and post only one thread on same topic, pick the forum, thanks. :)

I have combined the two

the damage to my truck hasnt been to bad ,the only wires burnt up were, wires going back to trailor , i bought a 03 with 4500 miles a C4500 dump truck at same dealer so they been helping me out on my truck that caught on fire ,they only had to splice two wires in the wiring harness and order a new plastic shroud , the c4500 is red with alcoa wheels 8.1 liter 2000 allison 5 speed automatic tranny 4.88 pumpkin gears , 12foot dumpbody with electric pto, it handles the weight with ease it has 19.5 in wheels 225 70 19.5s, makes the 3500 feel like a piece of junk , that victory red is really sharp i owned that truck for a week now it still looks like new , ive been up to the stone quarry twice , and making lots of dust with 90 pound air hammers ,that color stays nice . my 3500 is black its an 04 scratched to pieces .

i got a c 4500 dump truck, i went to the dealer were they towed my truck to ,so i bought it so ,they would help me out on my 3500, i went to add the c 4500 on my gmac insurance policy and they said we dont insure vehicles that are one ton and over , i didnt say anything , im thinking how did they insure my 3500 and put it on a gmac policy ?good thing i didnt have to turn it in on my insurance the fire damage on my 3500.

Ace,

Keep the wheels rolling, that's where the bucks are.

Glad it worked well for you, the other situation had a lot of Down Sides.

Good Luck.

thanks your all your replies , i went down to the dealer , i taked to the mech whos been working on my 3500 , he showed me that the wireing harness is fine, a wire from the break senser was burnt in two and two break lines where severed where the trailor wire went through and it only needs a front wheel well plastic shroud . they r going to fix my air conditioner and my rear end and the break pads, the one in the rear is at 25percent the other 3 are at 50 the service bullitin recommends mud flaps .

Try using fuses and circuit breakers on all power wires. My bet is it rubbed through arc'd the brake wires and went up in flames.

It seems a little late to look now, but if the electrical wire shorted out the plastic insulation will usually sluff off from the short to the power source. When you see this one time it is easy to spot. If the plastic did not sluff off at all I would look for a different source that caused the fire, ie.. combustible fluid on hot surface.

Almost lost my truck the same way. Had 00 guage wire running from battery to welder in the bed, it then shorted out to the bed (actually very funny story) and the shortest path to battery ground is through the body ground strap that goes from the engine to the fire wall right next to the booster and from the wire between the battery and frame right next to the BCM. They both went up in flames. Luckilly no damage though. If your wire was heavier than either of these grounds, the grounds will burn first like they did with me.
