: Shut-down squeal noise
Siphon 06-24-2005, 03:51 PM Hey guys- I'm still getting used to all the noises the new pickup makes, and trying to figure out whether they're "normal" or not. So, here's one I'm not sure about: When I shut her down, there's a real brief squeal from the front of the truck. It sounded like belt squeak to me, so I checked it, and it looks OK -- no cracks or unusual wear apparent. I haven't heard it squeal any other time, including while I'm romping on the throttle to feed my newly acquired boost addiction. Does anyone else's truck do this?
Thanks.
Diesel Power 06-24-2005, 03:54 PM do you have dual alternators?
precision37 06-24-2005, 03:58 PM That's normal. High compression engine shuts off, stops instantly while accessories still try to turn. Makes a little squeak against the belt.
96vette 06-24-2005, 04:02 PM That's normal. High compression engine shuts off, stops instantly while accessories still try to turn. Makes a little squeak against the belt. Yup :exactly:
Siphon 06-24-2005, 04:05 PM You guys kick ass... Three seconds and my question is answered.
:hail:
On Edit: Oops, sorry Diesel Power, didn't see your post at first... No, as far as I can tell I only have one alternator (mounted at front of engine valley).

maxedout22 07-21-2005, 01:41 PM I was about to ask the same question because I'm in your same situation-new truck, never had a diesel and kept hearing asqueal at shutoff. Thanks a lot, you guys kick a**
luvthesmellofdiesel 07-21-2005, 02:27 PM How bout another twist on this...
I have the ZF/6 tranny which has a flywheel of course. When I had the stock dual mass flywheel, and it was not broken, I would get the so-called belt squeal on shut-down. When the flywheel went bad, I stopped getting the squeal. When a new DMF was installed, the squeal came back. When it went bad, squeal gone. When I installed an aftermarket single mass flywheel, I have never heard the squeal.
Anyone else with the ZF/6 ever notice the connection between working and broken DMF's and the belt squeal or am I imagining things possibly?
Tim
BIGMoe 07-21-2005, 02:59 PM I am driving my second diesel pickup. My first one was a 98 Dodge with the Cummins 24 valve turbo diesel. I noticed the shut-down squeal more with the the Cummins that I have with the Duramax. But it is normal for a high compression diesel to do this.:)
Timberwolf530 07-21-2005, 03:00 PM My truck does it too.
Lennox69 07-22-2005, 03:06 PM the older the belt the worse it would get...it's normal!!!!
