My ol' tranny is getting tired! doesn't "bite" like it should upon cold startup and is now winding out a bit more than I care for as well before shifting out of first. I don't have the bucks to rebuild it at this time. will lucas tranny treatment help these problems to buy me some time? If not do any other additives help out? Thanks in advance. Brent

Lucas sure makes some great claims about their additives. I used their oil stabilizers in my 90 L05 and it keeps it from smoking and leaking oil. I have never used the stuff in a trans before so I have no idea what it will do for you. Your best bet is to give it a try and see what happens. How many miles are on it? Good Luck.

lucas stuff isn't a good idea. Hook a power drill up to one of those gear thingys and see what happens when you hit 3000 rpms on regular oil and gears, then the lucas treated stuff. It froths so bad that there's no lubrication.

I'd just recommend babying it and saving up for a tci rebuild kit.

That gear thingy is their oil treatment right? I have never seen it demonstrate the trany additive but will look further into it before trying it. Thanks Brent

If its starting to slip I would suggest to put a kit in it asap. If you run it till it completely quits then it usually costs more (usually much more) to rebuild it. Those 700R4's are really preaty simple transmissions to rebuild and you can get a rebuild kit for around $150.00. There are only about 2 special tools I can think of that you might need, I suspect those can be rented for the weekend preaty cheap at most part houses. Or at least they can be down here in Fla. I usually throw a rebuild kit at my trans around 100,000 miles and know its in good shape for another 100,000 miles. I realize not everyone is able or willing to go tearing into a transmission. But if you can and money is tight all I am saying is don't be afraid of it, its really preaty cheap if you do the work yourself. I usually get a parts book from AC Delco or Napa or somewhere that show the parts breakdown just in case something doesn't look right, it will give me a reference to refer to. If you wait till it quits completely you will usually get metal shavings throughout the trans and cooler. These are a real pain to get cleaned out. I haven't found any way to clean metal out of the Torque Converter and this would probably have to be replaced as well. (Usually another $150.00) Then you got to figure out where the metal came from and replace that part as well.
So reguardless if you decide to do the work yourself or have someone else do it, it would be much cheaper on you to rebuild before it quits.
