: 6.5 Timing Chain and Injector Pump simultaneously

I started changing out the Injector Pump which is completely torn-down, then I realized I should change the Timing Chain too. Now I'm torn-down all the way to the chain, but with the chain set not removed yet. Now I realize I should have accounted for the timing of the engine some how. I have not rotated the engine but am confused on keeping the timing correct. I stupidly jumped right in on the engine not ever working on a diesel before. I've done it all with Gas engines and was not intimidated by this and that explains my stupidity.

Is the IP timed electronically or should I reinstall it and make some markings? (and orient the new IP to those marks?)

New IP won't have marks so forget that idea. Just align the pump up dead square and level.

I know i will get flak on this but all you need for the timing chain is to buy a early 93 set and reuse the bottom crank gear. You'll save a bunch of cash and you'll only need to pull the bottom gear back just a little to get the chain off.

Done this on several trucks and the chain was tight on all. Engine rebuilder showed me this.

Of course you need to align the gears with their timing marks before slapping on the new pump. Do a search and you should come up with some good instructions on how to do it. Otherwise, check back with us. The gears between the crank timing gear and the cam timing gear have to be aligned right, otherwise things won't add up.

I am not at TDC. Should I reinstall the IP in order to move the engine to TDC or will the IP matter? I realize I cannot mark the old IP but I can mark where it seats and install the new one in the same orientation. The timing chain only installs one way, right?

Leave pump off and follow gear timing when installing chain and gears.
