: Is White Smoke definitely injectors?
love4god 03-02-2010, 11:55 PM Just made the last payment on my 03, manufacture date is out of the 7 years (i'm at about 180k miles).
When idling i'm blowing white smoke. I noticed a little smoke a couple months ago but it stopped, i thought maybe because i was towing (RV) or going up steep hill.
But now i'm seeing smoke regularly. So is there anything else this could be or am I looking at the $5k injector job? I don't have the know how to do this myself even if I can find a good deal on the injectors.
If it is definitely the injectors, how long can you normally go blowing some smoke before your damaging your engine worse or breakdown? Do I have some time to save some cash or is this something that needs to be done immediately?
Changed oil today, didn't make any difference.
AussieDMAX 03-03-2010, 01:24 AM I think warranty is for 7 years from when the truck was first put in service; this could be a fair bit later than the manufacture date. You may be lucky; ask someone to do a VIN check for you.
Good luck,
Cheers,
Aussiedmax
duramax4life 03-03-2010, 01:28 AM i agree. be willing to bet if you hit up the right dealer ( saying it is an injector problem ) that the extended warranty on those LB7's would cover your ride.
Gearhead1 03-03-2010, 03:21 AM I heard that the smoke your explaining could either be a dirty or bad MAF sensor or injectors.
Injectors without a question. I had the same symptoms. Took it to the GM Dealer told them it was blowing smoke at idle and choking my wife inside the cab and that when I changed the oil the week before I took it in I got more then 10 quarts out. My truck is a 2003 as well. Have them run the diagnostics ($90 fee) if it turns out to be injectors which it will they will pay for the entire thing. I did not pay a dime and got it back last week. Runs like a new truck..The service date is the day you drove it off the lot. If you are not the original owner have someone run the VIN # and check as it probably is still under the 7 years but probably not by much so time is a wastin. Mine expired in June of this year so I made it just under the wire. Good Luck. JABS
love4god 03-03-2010, 03:43 PM Just requested a VIN check, fingers crossed!

wildeman 03-03-2010, 03:58 PM X2 on injectors. Mine did the same thing.
love4god 03-03-2010, 04:20 PM BTW, how long do I have? Is it safe to drive around for a few days, few weeks, few months before getting this job done (assuming i'm out of warranty)?
It doesn't always blow, but seems to blow a little bit off an on now. If we are on a long drive, when we get to surface streets and sit at a light you can really notice it. It doesn't look like much more than condensation smoke on a cold day, but I know it's more than that because it happens any time now, cold or not, wet or dry.
Gearhead1 03-04-2010, 03:10 AM I've been driving mine for almost a year now with the smoke at idle. Still runs great, no problems so far. I keep checking to make sure I'm not making oil though.
X2 until my wife would not stop complaining about the smell of diesel inside the cab when stopped at a light. Thats when I finally took it to the dealer and crossed my fingers. All 8 replaced on GM's dime. Worth the fight in my mind. My service writer told me what would happen from the start regarding the warranty so I was pretty sure they were getting replaced for free because of what he told me when I dropped off.

love4god 03-04-2010, 10:57 AM I tried posting a Vin check in the other thread, no response yet. Is this something I could call GM and ask?
whitecrew 03-04-2010, 11:16 AM A bad FPR could cause white smoke at idle, at least it was on mine.
love4god 03-04-2010, 12:53 PM What is an FPR, also and MAF sensor. I should probably check these first. I'll check my Chilton book but is someone can point me in the right direction. thanks.
love4god 03-04-2010, 01:36 PM Well i'm a little under 3 months out of warranty. :(
It looks like they swapped out injectors at 68k miles before i owned it.

torqueandhorses 03-04-2010, 02:21 PM A FPR would be a fuel pressure regulator and a MAF would be a mass air flow sensor any body correct me if im wrong
You are correct. You can clean the MAF but when I removed mine to clean it. It was already clean. I sprayed it with MAF electrical component cleaner (available at Autozone) and reinstalled it did not notice any difference ended up being injectors.
