was thinking of putting a squires on my 8100 with the stock clutch Think it will fry it? other than exhaust what you think will need to be modded i talked to tierod about it a year ago but pretty much forgot all he told me i hope he checks in on this thread my truck has 70k on it now dont know if that would be an issue how hard are they to install i think if i get the universal kit with a specific 8100 turbo i can save a lot of money can i do that where do you tap in for the turbo bearing oil? what kinda of hp numbers can i see any info at all is appreciated

Do A Front mount. You'll be happier with less headache.
I use to Have an STS turbo kit on my old 04 Z71.
It was a fun kit, ran well and sounded sweet. But Driving in the rain made it bog sometimes,
And i didnt like the return scavenging oil pump.
One time it quit on me and i had oil and smoke pouring out of my turbo.
I also had an underhood fire cuz my return line leaked oil on my exhaust manifold.
Just do a front mount and be done with it.
Try finding info on performancetrucks.net .

no one makes a front mount for a 8.1L, and you cant flip the exhaust manifolds like the ls motors, trust me, i tried

Time to get creative!
But i guess a remote mount is the only way to go then easily.
But that damn oil return pump is one big reliabilty issue. I bought a spare and kept it in the truck along with extra relays.
Also i made a custom braided oil return line to replace that cheap heater hose STS gives ya.

well with some tig welding skill and a pipe bender couldnt a gut put the sts turbo where the air box would normally be?

With skill and a welder you can do about anything bud!
Maybe try Calling Trick performance or Nelson performance, both in texas, maybe they could fab you up a kit, Im not very familar with the 8.1 as far as exhaust, and engine compartment room.
Or just get the STS kit and Put a snorkel( remote air intake tube ) up in your fender well or bed to prevent sucking in water.

Wouldn't a Magnacharger or Whipple supercharger be easier than trying to fabricate a turbo set up? An STS unit might be cheaper, but by the time you get done with fabrication (turbo plumbing) and tuning, (because it will react different with a different length and more bends in the piping), and headaches, instead of using something that is already engineered for that application?

A sizable turbo that is good for remote mount is going to be too small for a conventional setup. At the end of the exhaust you have less gas velocity. Rear mounts use smallish turbine housings to spool quick. AT the motor you have hotter expanding gas with higher velocity so the smaller housings will generally choke the motor out.

because no one makes a bolt in supercharger kit for the 8.1. whipple has one but is for the marine motors not truck motors. and even the old sidemount whipple is no longer available unless you get it used somewhere.

if i did a rear mount would it be to long a stretch to pipe my outside new air from where the factory air filter was to get it out of the rain

Paxton is the only manufacturer still making a supercharger for the 8.1L. It's a centrifugal unit, which I despise for street use. I dont think it would be that hard to fab up a front-mount turbo if you had the equipment to do it.
I wonder if a stock duramax turbo would work decent?
