: 1st Oil Change @ 3900 Miles
6 Shooter 06-24-2005, 10:23 AM Everything has gone great so far with the new truck.
The DIC says I'm only @ 65% on Oil but I would like to change the Beast, I've made a few 500 mile pulls and just want to clean it out a bit.
What are a few recommendations for Brand of Oil & Filter?
Thanks In Advance

idahofox 06-24-2005, 10:31 AM I like Amsoil, 15W - 40 Synthetic, I also use the Amsoil filter. This is a personal Choice. There are many good choices.
Were I still using Dino oil, my choice would be Delo 400, 15W - 40 with a Baldwin filter.
Many will chim in, it's very personal.

BigStu128 06-24-2005, 11:05 AM Same thing here. I would change it with Dino Oil till you get about 10,000 miles on it, then change over to the Amsoil 15-40 Diesel Synthetic Oil and a good filter. It is a little on the expensive side, but I think it is worth it.
According to Amsoil it should go like this, 10,000 miles on truck - switch to synthetic. Then every 10,000 miles after that put new filter on, top off oil.
When there is 30,000 miles on the oil, drain and start with new oil and filter.
According to amsoil if you use their filters and oil that is the recommended drain interval. Aparently they have Duramax test data and oil analysis that determined the interval.
Don't forget at 10,000 you alsno need to put a new Allison Spin on filter on. I also put in Amsoil Synthetic Tranny fluid in the Allison and in my transfer case.
BigShrimpah 06-24-2005, 11:16 AM Im using Shell Rotella T in mine untill I get over 10k mile on it, then I am going to synthetic.
bailer 06-24-2005, 11:32 AM Since I work for an oil company and am not paying advertising here I'll stay out of the oil brand portion of the argument. For filters I like Baldwin and Donaldson. The NAPA (Wix) filters are also pretty darn good and easy to find.
If you're going to extend drains to 30,000 miles, please run oil analysis.
ovrxpsd 06-24-2005, 03:10 PM Here's my .02.
I agree with most here, You can't go wrong with Delo 400 or Rotella T. Both very good HD diesel oils.
dan_diesel 06-24-2005, 08:14 PM I don't work for an oil company (anymore) and I'm on record for Delo 400 15w 40 changed at 5k intervals and I like Wix filters.
I personally think that the syn folks that go (or recommend) extended drain intervals are being penny-wise and pound foolish with a 40 to 50 thousand dollar truck. There is nothing I have read/seen/tested that proves to me that the additive package lives as long as many will have you believe.
Also be aware of the type of marketing and compensation program is set up for the one syn oil mentioned above. Frankly if I were going syn (which 99% of us DON'T need), I'd stick with a PAO based syn oil, ala Mobil 1.
My $.02 worth and I'm sure we'll hear more...
Texasdeere 06-24-2005, 11:44 PM So far I have been using Amsoil "oil filters" and Delo 15w40 "oil". I changed it at 1500 miles and will change it again at 5000 miles, and so on. My recomendations would be, use a good name brand oil, Rotella, or Delo. These oils are easy to find. Use a high quality filter, like Donaldson, Baldwin, Amsoil... Not so easy to find around here so I order mine in bulk and keep plenty on the shelf. What ever combo you pick, just stick with it. I personaly like to run Dino oil in the engine and synthetic in everything else.
Good luck and have fun...
Dave01PSD 06-24-2005, 11:51 PM I changed oil for the first time at 600 miles and used mobil1 filter and delo 400. I will be changing every 3000 miles. I am having a hard time deciding if I should switch to mobil1 T&S later on or just stick with 3k oil changes and delo. The most I could ever go and keep peace with myself is 5k on a synthetic. I worry more about fuel dilution than anything as I make short trips of 10-30 miles sometimes. Tough decisions but im pretty sure I cant go wrong with 3k changes and delo.
