Has anyone ever used a Gear Vendor overdrive set up on an Allison trans. Me and buddy of mine were talking about this today since our fuel milage goes to hell at any speed over 65mph. Dont know if its possible just curious.

Don't think the current model can handle the torque....

Been told that the guts of these things are based on Volvo parts that originally found home in 4 cylinder powered cars. Agree with MARKSRT43 can't handle the torque.

I had a blown 460 dually pushing well over 500H.P. My deck boat weighed 8000LBS and my trailer at the time weighed 14,500LBS. I never had a problem with it. After a year and a half of use I sold it to my best friend. He installed it in his Excursion still No problems. He tows my old trailer as well. I''m not buying the "to much torque" story yet. They put these things on Huge motorhomes that weigh several (20) tons, loaded. There is no way they could do that and not have problems if there was a strength issue. just my $.02

Didn't they put one on a new Cummins in the first issue of Diesel Power??

Ask the guys with BOMBed Cummins trucks about GV.

It does not take long to trash one at 1400+ LBS-FT

Stock you would be ok.

Juice,

Who tows with that kind of power? Seriously? If they can tow 10,000+ LBS up a 7%+ grade for more than 1 mile well.... my hats off to them.

However, myself and most D.P. members (including you with the up-most respect) don't own a truck with a trailer in tow that is capable of having 500+ HP and 900+ TQ that can climb a grade for a substacial amount of time at W.O.T.. Am I not rite? If I'm wrong well then I appologize. I know that the engine/tranny will fail before the O/D

I love reading and hearing about the big dawgs smokin little imports at the drags. Thats one thing, but I'm talking about the weekend warrior with a family and a toy/trailer box going over mountains. You can NOT tow heavy weight with your edge set on level 5..... well you can for about 1 minute until BOOM!!!! GOT AAA ):h You know what I'm sayin, overdrives are for towing not performance racing.

Well, for the record I do tow at full power, more than 10K up the Salmo Creston which incidentally is a 7% or better grade (and don't need WOT...*** shows 67% APP). Last 1.5 miles IIRC is 9%. Lastly., but not least our oil cooled engine (coolant to the oil cooler prior to engine coolant passageways) shows very few water temp spikes.... what i might add next is an oil temp gauge. Something tells me that water temps on an LB7 (or LLY for that matter) is not the be all end all limit of performance. I have a real sneaking suspicion that our oil temps might shock quite a few members. Time for another gauge i guess.

On the other hand, your point is valid other than the fact MikeR (www.thepowershop.com (http://www.thepowershop.com/)) has witnessed more than a couple failures on a 12V CTD.

More in the nature of a warning than anything. If you are running heavy BOMBs, the GV will not long survive it under load with a lot of power. I am actually very interested in a GV unit when it becomes available for highway cruising. About the only thing that would make me decide against it is if we could get a 3.55 or 3.23 gearset in our application.

Yes, I know that would be a lot of gear to climb on, but we can cure almost anything with power no?:o:

I'm certainly all for more MPG's and maybe a little more top end:o:

And I am not trying to sound like I am flaming .... Just reporting on experiences of others.

How in the world are you towing at full power? When I use anything more than a "tow" tune or slightly more than that, EGTs just get out of hand WAY too easily.

What gives?

Damn, I gotta get me some of those!

In that same situation with a small tune, I'd see more like 800°!

Hook me up, Scotty! lol
