: need advice on programming/exhaust LLY
Jud Williams 06-23-2005, 03:45 PM Have a 2004.5 LLY. I want to upgrade to a MBRP 4in. exhaust, what do I need to do to avoid throwing codes?
Also want to add Diablo predator or edge/juice/attitude. which would be safer for my tranny?:iamwithst
toyotasaurus 06-23-2005, 06:33 PM From what I've read on here (by searching  ) is that if you just put on a cat-back you won't throw any codes. If you remove the cat, you need the fingers stick. At that point, you can block the egr as well.
For programmers, the Edge is the only one of your choices that has tranny protection. See the responses to your other thread.
And learn to SEARCH, the reason I don't have many posts is that I've been able to find most of the answers to my questions by searching. Expect to get much  if you ask questions that are constantly asked.
IdahoRob 06-23-2005, 06:54 PM Depends if you have a fed. or Cali truck as for as codes. I removed the cat and even have removed exhaust from four bolt flange and haven't thrown a code yet. Cali trucks I've read, you can either remove cat or muffler, but not both unless you get a finger stick. Although not sure on aftermarket stuff. As far as programmers, I'd stay under the 70/80hp range for the stock trans. Predator is nice for checking/removing codes and changing tire size and is inexpensive.
Have fun,
Rob
MXdiesel 06-24-2005, 01:54 AM I 2nd everything said above, either programmer is good, as long as you keep the HP under within resonable limits like IdahoRob said. If u are interested in a finger stick you can get them from our member "fingers", and u can get an EGR blocker from john@dps. Hope that helps.
Mark Craig 06-24-2005, 09:49 AM Jud Williams,
Get the cat back and you're almost guaranteed no SES lights at all, go with the Predator if you plan to add gauges, especially if you tow. If you get the Edge Juice/Attitude you get the gauges in the package so the insatll is a little easier, but the cost is a little more. Both products protect the tranny and such so you're ok there. Call us if you have any questions etc, we'll be glad to help you.

RaceHemi 06-24-2005, 11:30 AM C'mon Mark, NO power adder protects the trans! Especially the Predator, sure the Edge box defuels upon detecting slippage, however, this only prolongs the inevitable. It's been proven over and over, a stock Allison WILL need clutches if run at levels above 680-700rwtq for any length of time, doesn't matter which power adder you run. Now if self control is exhibited and a person runs only the lower level tunes your trans will last longer but self control usually goes out the window soon after the first taste of the added power and before you know it you are ordering trans parts. IMO, go with the TTS Tow Tune if Allison longevity is an issue.
As a matter of fact, I threw my self control so far out the window I may never find it again! ):h
Mark Craig 06-29-2005, 11:59 AM RaceHemi,
Your'e right, but these products give you the ability to see what is happening (Edge) and realize what you're doing is potentially going to damage the tranny. The other products leave you out in the open by yourself. If you drive sanely you'll still get a real long life from a stock tranny.

Jud Williams 06-30-2005, 09:07 AM Thanks for the reply Mark,
I'm caught between the edge/juice vs. predator vs. banks six gun. What do you recommend? Also I understand the big difference between the LLY and the old duramax is the emissions particularly the catalytic converter causing the LLY to have less performance. It would seem removing the cat. and installing a larger diameter performance exhaust would decrease exhaust temp. and greatly improve performance. Is this correct or am I off base? thanks for the help!
lakingslayer 06-30-2005, 09:42 AM The Banks and the Edge offer defueling between shifts to help protect the tranny. I'm not sure how the Banks works but you have some selections on the Attitude. You can defuel between all locked shifts, between 4th and 5th, or No defueling. I ran my Edge on 5/5 for a while with the stock tranny and defueled on all locked shifts. I only got on it when T/H was engaged so the TC would lock in 2nd. I eventually limped it with a 5th to 4th downshift while heavy on the peddle. The predator may have some defueling but it isn't enough IMHO for a stock tranny if you are above the 65hp tune. If you don't want to do the tranny don't add more than 65 hp on the predator and 75hp on the Edge. With all that said I would go with either the Banks or the Edge.
Get the exhaust done. It will help lower EGT's. If you want get rid of the kitty. It will also help lower EGT's. I have the MBRP Turbo back system and I love it. Of course I have the EGR blocked and a finger stick to prevent codes. IMHO this is the best thing you can do for the truck besides adding fuel filtration.
Jud Williams 06-30-2005, 10:00 AM Thanks lakingslayer,
I'm looking to get the attitude/juice and exhaust at the same time. It sounds like even with a cat. back you lower EGT's is it really worth it to get the exhaust cat back in your opinion?
Mark Craig 06-30-2005, 10:32 AM Jud Williams,
For the max safety get the Juice/Attitude, tranny de fuel and EGT de fuel all in one. The stock cat on LLY's isn't horrible like the cats of just a few years ago. If you pull it as was mentioned you'll need the finger and block off plate. You will see a 25 degree EGT difference and a slight spool up difference if you remove it, small but noticeable etc. Call us if you have any questions etc.

Mark_my_word 06-30-2005, 10:42 AM Mark,
Have you done any testing to come up with that 25 degree decrease by removing the cat or is that just anecdotal and is that 25 degrees across the board under alll different conditions. With or without a chip tuner?
I have the MBRP 4" turbo back but don't have guages or a chip/tuner yet so I don't know what my egts were before or after the exhaust was done but I have heard larger decreases in egts from others with cat back exhausts and guages.
lakingslayer 06-30-2005, 10:55 AM Yes. The stock muffler and 3.5 inch system is more restrictive than a cat back system. I started out with the cat back and then added the Juice so I can't give any personal info on the lowering of EGT's (no way to monitor without the Attitude). I do know that I could hear the turbo better so I'd say I had less restriction. After I removed the cat my truck started sounding more like a jet and the EGT's dropped a bit.
