im new to thes forum, but i have to say it is a great place! anyways, i live in Manitoba Canada, and my dad bought a 1995 TD 2500 about 2 years ago. at the time the truck was all stock with 62 000 km on it. it now has 140 000 km. on the F style engine. we cut the cat out, and put a strait 3" pipe all the way to a magnaflow performace muffler. for the intake we put a K&N drop in.

now last summer the truck through a code 36, which we belive to be the PMD. so we drove the truck through the winter, no problems except for starting. when its real cold out side, the truck sounds like it is gona stoll. lots of vibrating and shaking, and LOTS of black smoke. it will last about 10 sec, and you can step on the gas as much as you want during the 10 sec and it wont help.

now yesterday were driving around town and get behind this slow car, so my dad pulls into the other lane and steps on it, and all we saw was black smoke(im thinking:cool2:, my dads like"ahhh s***") and we've also notice very little power. so we get home and pull the codes, we get: 13, 29, 36, 57, 62, 78,84, AND 99! so now we know we have problems.

so Ive been doing some seaching and it seems that the PCM or ther PCM harness is gone. and the PDM is gone. and the lose of power i think has somthing to do with the vacume system.

so how would you go about fixing all the codes? any things to check first before spending money? thanks alot guys:)

Black smoke and no power means turbo not working. Search FAQ thread here in the 6.5 section to trouble shoot. This is a common issue with 6.5's and most often not too terribly tough or expensive to fix.

After you get the turbo working again, disconnect the batteries for 10 minutes to reset teh computer and go for a ride. Then check for new codes and post back here.

Good luck!

From kennedydiesel.com:

DTC 13 - Engine Shutoff Solenoid Circuit Fault
DTC 29 - Glow Plug Relay Fault
DTC 36 - Injection Pulse Width Error (Response Time Long)
*DTC 57 - PCM 5 Volt Shorted
DTC 62 - Turbo Boost Sensor Circuit Low
DTC 78 - Turbo Wastegate Solenoid Fault
*DTC 84 - Accelerator Pedal Position Circuit Fault
DTC 99 - Accelerator Pedal Position 2 (5 Volt Reference Fault)

So, what does it all mean . . . you got a stinkin' mess. . . or maybe not.

First off, Wade has a point, check out turbo, that seems to be a biggie. Other thing to check is the engine ground from passenger side firewall to engine head. Remove, clean, and re-install it (exactly, don't cut corners). Check your batteries, and those pitiful sidepost connections (do same as with engine ground). All seems to be somewhat electrically related *maybe*, with the exception of the 36. If I read your km's right, that pump should still be under warranty? (sorry, I'm used to the silly American measurement system that makes no sense)

Black smoke and loss of power could mean your wastegate solenoid is not working and by the turbo not working, it is compounding the problems. w_huisman's idea is a good place to start.

ok well this morning we took the PCM out and cleaned the conections on the harness. slaped it back in, and went for a drive. we get home, and now the ONLY code is 36! so now we dont think were as screwed. now for the harness, where it enters the truck, under the AC hoses on the passanger side, can you unplug that some how to clean that conection?

so tommorow we'll take the grounds off and sand all the paint that is probly under the connection, hopefully that will help a lil.

thanks alot guys, this place has already saved us hundreds.:exactly:

The code 36 is where it will cost you. That code means the fuel metering is slower than 2 ms and the IP will have to be replaced eventually, other symptoms of DTC 36 are surging stalling and a very sensative fuel pedal.

WD21, what part of Manitoba you in?

I'm in Winnipeg,

As previously noted, with 140,000 Km, you are probably still well withing the 193,000 Km / 11 year extended injection pump warrenty, depending on the date the truck initially left the dealership.

Being a '95, it could have been initially sold in half-past '94, or whenever the '95 model year became available, or anytime in '95.

Your code 36 may be a blessing in disguise. Worth checking out if in fact your IP is going south. Find out when the truck was sold, there is a separate thread on this board for VIN checks if you don't have any record of the original sale.

There are a few tricks and tips before you go to the dealer to claim your warrenty, you can search on here for past posts, or perhaps someone will point you in the right direction.

good luck

Depending on the day the truck was sold and put in use, if you fall within those limits then your getting

I'm just a stone throw west of ya in Whyte Ridge,

And as per CR, it all depends on when the truck was sold to the first buyer. Warranty on the pump applies for 11 years after the date of initial purchase, and is in effect regardless of transfer of ownership.

If the truck left the dealership before June 24, 1994 then you would be too late today. Anytime after that, and the warranty still applies, but the pump does also have to be defective, and whether a code 36 is sufficient evidence of that I don't know.

I have a copy of the special policy at home.

They may be trying to screw you, or maybe they just don't know, I've heard several horror stories of dealers, but also know there are some very good ones in and around town. A dealer can easily run the VIN to determine the date the truck was first sold.

Did they run the VIN do you know, or give your dad any specific reason as to why they declared no warranty?

The policy number for the special extended pump warranty I think is #00064 or something like that, there may be a few more or less zeros, but at any rate the last two digits are 64 and I have it at home and can give you a copy.

Found it...

Dear General Motors Customer:

As the owner of a 1994-1998 Chevrolet C/K Pickup, Tahoe, Suburban, Chevy Van/Express or P model truck; or GMC Sierra, Yukon, Suburban, Savanna or P model truck, equipped with a 6.5 litre diesel engine, your satisfaction with our product is very important to us. Your vehicle was provided with a new vehicle warranty, which covers certain parts of your vehicle for a specified period. These warranties are of considerable value to you if you should experience problems with your vehicle.

This letter is intended to make you aware that some 1994-1998 Chevrolet C/K Pickup, Tahoe, Suburban, Chevy Van/Express or P model trucks; or GMC Sierra, Yukon, Suburban, Savanna or P model trucks, equipped with a 6.5 litre diesel engine, may develop a failure of the electronic fuel injection pump.

To address the above mentioned condition, General Motors is providing owners with special warranty coverage. If this condition occurs on your 1994-1998 Chevrolet C/K Pickup, Tahoe, Suburban, Chevy Van/Express or P model truck; or GMC Sierra, Yukon, Suburban, Savanna or P model truck within eleven (11) years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 193,000km (120,000 miles), whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. Damage from poor quality or incorrect grade diesel fuel, and gasoline or water contamination, is not covered under the terms of the 6.5L diesel warranty. This special policy applies ONLY to electronic diesel fuel injection pump repairs and/or replacement as a result of injection pump failure.

This is not a recall campaign. Do not take your vehicle to your GM dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.

If you have already paid for some or all of the cost to have the electronic diesel fuel injection pump repaired or replaced and the in-service time and mileage were less than eleven (11) years and 193,000km (120,000 miles), you should contact your dealer for reimbursement consideration. Please provide your dealer with your original paid receipts or invoices verifying the repair, the amount charged, proof of payment, the date of payment of those charges, and proof of ownership of the vehicle at the time of the repair. Your request for reimbursement, including the information and documentation mentioned above, must be received by your dealer by September 30, 2001.

If the work was done by a Stanadyne dealer or other service establishment other than a GM dealership, you may not be eligible for reimbursement. Your dealer will review the case with the General Motors representative for reimbursement consideration. The amount of reimbursement will generally be limited to the amount that the repair would have cost GM to have it completed by a GM dealership.

Repairs and adjustments qualifying under this special coverage must be performed by a GM dealer. You may want to call the service department at the dealership to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will also allow your dealer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your other important glovebox literature for future reference.
