If I was to buy a superchip or hypertech programmer, and only use the 60 hp setting for towing until I get the cold air intake and 4" exhaust, would this be ok without hurting my truck? Thanks

P.S. The only reason I mentioned these two programmer, is to be able to read the diagnostic. If there is a better one please feel free to info me. This is mainly for towing a 31ft. camper trailer.

Anytime you put a program on your truck and tow you should have a pyro. Dont really need a boost gauge unless you are monkeying with the wastegate or something like that but you shouldnt need one otherwise, nice to have though.

The powerloader 3 from TTS is supposed to have a reader function when it comes out
Predator has a reader function
Quadzilla has one
quad and bullydog share the same hardware so I would assume bully dog has the function too but I duno.

Reading codes IMO isnt really all that big of a deal. Yes its nice but all it will do is show codes, you wont really have all the diagnostics of a real scan tool. Some will show injector balance rates witch is cool(but you can still have good balance rates and crappy injctors) but they wont show you info to really be able to fix your stuff. And once your outa warantee most parts store will read your codes for you.

IMHO a code reading capability is a nice added feature but I would put that lower on my list. I would look at other things I wanted it to do/important to you first. Like price range, egt and trany backdown, built in gagues, ease of use, if switchable on the fly, ability to adjust your speedo for different tires, rasie rev or speed limiter ect

Edit: I'd also stick with a stock airbox with a delco filter and just "swisscheese" it. http://www.wackywack.com/dmax.htm and scroll midway down

Bully dog will read codes too. I have one for sale with the 150hp setting activated if interested. Ive never had any problems with it, it will also reset the tranny so it can relearn. Ratlover is right, you should have boost and pyro gauges when using tuners on anything above the lowest setting. My Bully Dog has 50-70-90-150 settings. Also above 90hp the tranny starts to slip. Also as Ratlover said adjustablility on the fly is cool. The bully dog can be adjusted on the fly as well as backdown to protect tranny if you get the Outlook Monitor.

Cajunn,

Since you're especially interested in diagnostics get the Predator it has on the fly diagnostics and can even record and later down load 30 minutes worth of drive time. You can get to see what is going on as youy drive by parameter vs just getting a hard code that tells you X. Plus it's updatable on the net for free. Call us if you have any questions etc.

Does the Predator for the diesel read OBD II codes for all 1996-up vehicles, including non-GM, or just for the Duramax?

I already have a J/A for performance, and was looking to get an Actron SuperScanner for all my vehicles. It runs $279 at autozone, has real time scanning too.

Never mind, did search.

I'd like for you to show me how this is done. I've actually USED the tool and for the life of me cannot seem to find datalogging. Also updates are NOT availableon the net for free. You need to send it in.
