Morning all. I'm trying to replace my PMD (remotely) and need to disconnect the one that is bad. I am not going to remove it, just unplug it and run the wire to my new one and mount it away from the valley. My problem is; I found the PMD in the front top of the engine but I cn't figure out how to get to it, what do I need to disconnect or move to get to the wire that I need to disconnect? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks 1997 Chevy 6.5L TD

I have what I think is a failed PMD and I'm getting ready to do the same. Watching this thread to see what others say. Also which PMD did you buy and from who and how much? Also where are you going to mount the remote PMD at?

Hey there. Here is the link where I bought it. It cost a little more than some of the other cheaper ones but it is better quality and I hear the cheap ones go out on you quick. You can access the wiring harness with a long skinny screwdriver so don't bother taking the air intake manifold off which can be a real pita. I mounted it under the hood on top of the tire well drivers side. Everybody else likes to mount it in the front bumper but if you get into any minor fenderbender it'll get smashed and then there's another $300 you have to come up with in addition to your insurance deductable. Good luck.

I just ordered mine before I saw your post.
I went with these guys.

I sure hope it's not cheap one.
Was it a hard installation?
I like your comment about a little bump and there goes the PMD.
My factor one is really buried. The cable is going to be tough to get disconnected (need some small fingers). Sure hope there is extra cable in there to pull the connector out some to connect the extension.
Thanks again for your reply.

here is a link to most everything you want to know about the PMD.

IMO do not remote mount the PMD anywhere under the hood. It is way too hot under there.
You would be better off putting it back on the pump. Where the fuel will cool it. If you are going to go remote mount the PMD. Mount it Outside the engine compartment.... If you worry about a crash and dont like the front bumper try the cab... most here like behind the front bumper where there is good air flow. to cool.
It does not matter if you get in a fender bender or not..
If you mount it in the engine compartment it will just fail again and you will be buying a new one weather you get into a "fender bender" or not

Though this write up does tell you everything you need to know about the PMD, it does not give you a detailed how to on installation of your new remote PMD FSD or whatever. Is there one or am I just supposed to be smart enough to figure it out for my self?

On my '97 K3500 I was able to fiddle with mine and unplug it with a screw driver without removing the air plenum. I unweaved the harness and pulled it out from underneath the air plenum. I then made a bracket painted it black and fastened it to a bolt. This can be done without any extension cable. It took some time to get the harness unpluged and pull it out. Patients will prevail here. The main thing to accomplish is to get the PMD out from underneath the plenum, it is just to hot in there. The more plug connections that are added the more risk of problems when you do not want them.
Good luck!
