i was on duramaxtuner's site looking at prices for custom tuned ECMs. and i saw, "We strongly recommend TCM tuning for all trucks and will significantly increase drive-ability." is tuning the TCM worth the additional $200 and does it make much of a difference?

I don't buy it.

You can raise shift points. I still haven't got an answer from anyone what else to do beside raising the shift points.

I do know that you DO NOT want to run ALL Disabled inside the TCM tune. That's been known before and cause some issues with the Allison.

I hear duramaxtuner's custom tuned TCM's work great and make your trans last a really really really really really long time. :thumb:

Take away the vendor in question, what part do you not buy? Are you saying that a properly tuned TCM will not increase transmission life? Just trying to be clear here.

It has nothing to do with the vendor in question. I've done business with him. I don't have a bone to pick like most others.

I still run his tuning on my 04 8.1 Gas. And TCM tune actually... :D

I'm simply saying, you raise a few shift points..And....? Exactly, what else?

Everyone explains NOT to play with shift timing.... I just don't get it.

i just wonder, if you are running a stock tranny with a shift kit and not making anymore then 410hp to the wheels, does tuning the TCM make much of a difference?

I don't think you need it for that power. Heck, I still run a stock TCM for my built trans.

Josh2002cc..

I want to hear why you say it's worth it. I might learn something.

When you hear people say things like "don't mess with the TCM tuning" it is usually followed by "unless you know what you are doing". I believe when tuners who are in the know mess with the TCM it has more to do than just raising shift points and defuel but I could be wrong. Maybe we can get a tuner to come in and explain what they change and why they change it when tuning the TCM.

As for me saying to forget about the vendor in question it had nothing to do with anyone picking a bone with him it was just meant to put aside the things that were not important to this subject.

Nobody's going to give away the tuning secrets. I don't blame them..

I never asked or implied "they" should give out secrets. You saying they have "secrets" is validating my comment that trans tuning from the proper tuner can and will improve transmission life. When I hear about "secret" trans tuning I think of the days when Steve Cole talked about "missing" tables that allowed for improvement, which is still open for debate. ;)

I doubt a professional tuner who offers trans tuning would have a problem explaining the pro's of their services, call it a sales pitch if you will.

I'm not getting into that debate. I'm not a internet warrior. ;):D

from reading this it sounds like you should just leave the TCM alone; there isnt really an advantage to custom tuning it
