I have an 01 6.0 crew that I use to pull and 25ft toyhauler. Truck works great and gets the job done but I get left in the dust by my buddies that have diesels. I don't have the money to buy and new one and have been looking for something under 20k. I finally found an old cowboy that is ready for a new one and I am picking up his old 02 duramax 4x4 crew. It has 120k miles but still runs great. I have always been a chevy guy and have faith in them but I just need someone to tell me that everything is going to be ok. I hear things about the injectors and how the D max's have had some many problems. I am hopeing that these are isolated problems. I paid $18,500 for it. Can anyone tell me I did the right things or should I have gone with a newer one? Thank you. Great site!

Well Welcome first of all.. If you are happy with it then that is all that matters.. I think in the long run you will be ok as injectors if needed are covered and you can basically work on the truck yourself. You will find tons of info here and the search feature is your best friend. I know you will have tons of questions and I am sure most of them have been answered to some degree. So always use the search feature and then if you can not find what you are looking for then post away. You will have more answers than you know what to do with... Once again, welcome and it only gets fun from here.... and more expensive too...

would you say that 02's have more trouble than say an 03 or an 04?

I think all Duramax's may fall victim to the injector problem, but that is not to say you are going to have problems. The problem is actually very isolated compared to the number of Dmax's on the road, so don't worry about it... not to mention since you have an 02' your injectors are covered until 200,000 miles. Don't sweat it, you'll love it!

I would say they might have a little more trouble than the newer trucks but the motor was still new then so the bugs had to be worked out.. As far as expensive, I meant with mods for more power and trans, etc...

welcome.
Thanks for the reply and I feel better already, well except for the money part.
you should feel better about the money part.... you paid for about 2/3 of your truck, and he gave you the other 1/3. i don't know the condition or features, but that is by faaar deep into a good deal. nice work.
you are going to LOVE towing with it!
edited to include: i have an '02 i bought with 89k. i have put 6k trouble free miles on it. couple cobwebs to shake out at first (shocks, lof, pitman arm, fuel filter), but i feel like it is rock solid. also... you can check out blackstone labs to analyze the oil. it's like a urinalysis for your truck. $20 will tell you if your bearings are wearing okay, if you have any fuel in oil, water in oil, or any other debris.

I appreciate the reply's and encouraging words. This is my first time on the site and I am really liking it. Thank you and I hope I can be a source of help after I get to know my diesel.

Do a VIN check here; there is a seperate Form.
This will provide a record of all maintenance done by GM.

I just bought an '02 3500 but I came from a 5.3 Z71 that I pulled my trailers with. I have been patiently waiting waiting for my diesel for many years now. I am finally relieved that I got one. It is a blast to drive and a joy to tow with.
I know it will take more upkeep then the gasser........but it will last allot longer!

Welcome! Probably a good time to do a general matinence unless a VIN check shows a chevy dealer recently did it.
I at a minimum would change the engin oil and filter, fuel filter, and external spin on trans filter. Its on the front driver side and looks like a mini oil filter. Take off the old wipe down and replace the doughnut magnet(its a round dounut shaped magnet on the top of the filter inside(I've had it stick to the trans once though, if you dont find one I would order a new one) fill it full of ATF and reinstall
I would also at this point take care of the rear end and front diff's fluid, the fluid in the transfer case

Thanks for the advice. I have been trying to get a vin check in here but it looks like those that do it have been busy. Thanks for the heads up on the maintanance stuff.
