I am looking for some suggestions. I have a 2004, 3500, with the 48RE trans. I am upgrading trailers, but this also changes me from surge brakes, to electric. Has anyone installed the proportional electric brake controlers, and have good/bad experiences? I expect the total weight of trailer and load not to exceed 7000 lbs.
My truck has the tow package, so I am assuming I can just tie this in under the dash. Anything I need to be aware of before making a decision, or hooking up the system?
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Eric

87wbtarga,
Try looking @ the AccuPower Pilot breake controller. I have it in my 2500 and tow a 12,000# trailer and it seems to work great. Takes just a few minutes to install, it takes longer to find were you want it mounted then anything. Just a matter of splicing a couple of wires and plugging it in under the dash.
Good luck,
Chris

Hooking up is easy... assuming with a dually you do have the towing package... there should be a wiring harness in your glove box, wire it to the controler, plug it in the blue plug under the dash (left side of the steering column. I forgot the brand I have... picked it up at NAPA.

There are several good brake controllers out there. The Prodiogy is like the caddy and then the go down from there. Also look at the Draw-Tite 5500 it is a very good controller and is all digital.

I too tow a trailer about 7k load and a couple of motorcycles. Use the pigtail from the glovebox as stated above and you're ready to rock. You'll barely know the load is back there and can tow using overdrive if the grade is not too steep. To keep from getting an abrupt shift into fourth gear while towing, press in the tow button on the steering column while in town. After reaching about 50-55 mph, you can turn off the tow button and the shift to fourth will be smooth. Good luck.

One more thing you need to check your hitch rating. Most factory hitches are only rated at 5000lb wieght carring and 10000lb weight distributing.

Tekonsha Prodigy is tops in my book for inertial. If you want to go top shelf, get a Brakesmart. Plumbs into a brake line and applies according to your braking. And if your wiring harness isn't in your glove box check the pocket on the back of the passenger seat. That's where mine was. Harness plugs into port under dash and makes wiring the controller in a snap.
i second the brakesmart, nothing else comes close. it is smoother than anything else I have experienced and also very easy to install. you cant beat sensor technology. more expensive than the inertial controllers, but your truck and trailer are cheap either......
