I had a built 401 in my CJ7 that was a beast! It was a real strong high reving engine.

I had a 80 Spirit when I was young... Bright yellow! One wheel wonder...lol

A 4bt cummins w/4l80e may fit. They were used in step vans like fritos delivery trucks.

Take your current engine out and get you a 91+ 4.0L out of a JEEP. If your current engine is a 258 take the crank and rods out of it and put them into the 4.0L and you'll have a budget 4.5L stroker motor. Run the 91+ cylinder head and get an intake from CLIFFORD PERFORMANCE to run a 4 barrel and slap a 390 CFM HOLLEY or 500 CFM EDELBROCK on top. Run a COMP EXTREME cam, CLIFFORD header and use the old distributor with an MSD ignition and hang on. This combo will put you right around 225-250HP with some minor port work on the head, but your torque numbers will be well into the 300+ range and have one of the flattest torque curves you can imagine. I built one of these for a friend and we put it in his WRANGLER and with 4.10 gears and 32 " tires it will light em up, it will even wheelstand if the u-joints don't break first.

i got the car for free for a high school grad gift. i was thing a new 4.0L JEEP motor then some boost on top of that for a fun street car ... as for that 4.5l i could do that as mine is a 258. but 225 is kinda weak/slow to me i have a civic on 10 psi making 379 hp and my duramax thats pretty much stock. the amc is not going to be a drag car but a car that when people see it there going to be like wtf was that .

add some ignition timing to it also. used to put in 4-6* and gave them inlines a little pep. 4bt would be way too heavy, but nissan/mitsubishi made inline 6's that were size of 260/280z engine or maybe isuzu 4 cylinder, seems to be good swap engine.

225HP doesn't sound like much, but it feels strong when you have over 300 foot pounds of torque behind it VS the 150 or so that a small 4 cylinder will have. A 4.0L is a strong engine, but when you stroke em out to the 4.5L for a budget build they get down right impressive. A stock 4.0L HO is 190HP, and with some tuning you can get em around 220HP pretty easily. 300HP is obtainable pretty easily with a 4.6L(258 crank with a .030 over bore, i is reccomended to run the 4.0L rods and custom pistons though if you want more than 250HP as the shorter 4.2L rods will cause detonation problems from quench height problems) if you don't mind running some 93 octane.

my h22 makes around 275 285 tq on the stock motor and with the built im aimming for around 550 to 600 and tq will be around 450 all on e85,
as for this amc i looked in to 4.6L I was reading on them i can get the cr to about 9:1 so that would be good to boost with a holsut for a cummins:)
