New to diesels, I understand that after a time exhaust gases will turn acidic and begin to rot out components, what I don't know is how long will this take and what conditions accelerate this. I have an 07 crew Classic w/61000 mi. I put on about 7-10k a year, pulling a 30' trailer, and back and forth to camp.

Those gases are acidic in nature. They work their way into the oil. YOur oil is doing the protection. The TBN(total base number) of your oil will indicate whether it is protecting. Most oils come out of the bottle with a number of 10-12, depending on brand. Over time this number does fall and when it reaches about 2, it's time to change that oil. You have to run and oil a long ways before it will drop that far. If changing oil at OEM intervals, there are no worries of this falling out of range unless there is a mechanical problem....so long story short, you need not worry about problems from acidic corrosion unless the oil is never changed.

OP- Were you referring to a blocking the egr cooler with a plate and the remaining moisture/soot combo inside the cooler creating sulfuric acid and eating the insides out of the cooler causing coolant leaks?
There is a recent thread than mentions this.

yes that is what I was referring to. If I leave it stock does this become a non-issue?

If you leave it stock, eventually it will plug up with soot and PCV oil sludge. Sometimes sooner than later. I blocked mine and rerouted PCV, don't have any plans right now of removing the whole cooler just yet. Only have 32000 miles right now, blocked at 15K or so, PCV reroute at 20K, I think it will be alright for awhile.
Maybe it would be better if you just reroute the pcv, then you just have exhaust gas going in, no crank oil to make sludge. It might stay a little cleaner... it's still exhaust gas going into the manifold though. Not ideal in my eyes.

I really can't answer about the acid. I do know that a ton of people have blocked egr pipes on this site and I have never once heard of a rotted out cooler or any thing like that due to a blocked egr. For what its worth I would block it if I were you.
