CV axle boot split open. Can I replace just the boot? Of course I have to pull the axle in order to put a boot on, so might as well replace the axle correct?

Any reason to get aftermarket axles (cognito, etc.) are would a factory rebuild be just as sufficient?

The boots can just be replaced, but I'm not sure on the cost vs a new axle. If you have a lot of miles it might be a good idea to just do the axle.

They do have boots you can wrap around and come with a strap but I have not seen good luck with those, I agree with dozerboy.

naw man dont waste your money replacing the axle, theyre super strong unless theyve been wacked by rocks and show visible stress, just get a boot and regrease it

new boots are only a couple bucks on rockauto, i tore one of the stock plastic ones, so i replaced all 4 with neoprene ones and new cv grease.. the boots wont come with enough grease, so grab a couple extra packs (like $2 each)

after the cv's are off expect to spend 30mins or so changing the boots (for all 4)

when i bought my boots i also ordered a space cv too, under $70 for a cardone select brand new.. still sitting in the box for the day when i hit a rock too hard and need to replace one

i have over 200,000km on my original cv's without problems, the past 10k have been beaten hard too

x3 But.......If you are really a cheap ass, you can go to autozone or walmart and buy some stuff from called the "amazing goop" for $3-5, usually next to rtv, jb weld, etc. It is like a thick tire sealant or windshield sealer. This stuff can be spread over the tear and even sticks to grease pretty well(clean as much grease away as you can from the tear anyway though...don't get too cocky:D) Dries clear and is tough, while somewhat flexible. You will have to apply it a few times depending on how large the tear is, but it dries pretty quickly. (skins in 10-15min) Not too much, because it is LESS FLEXIBLE than the boot and will take away some of its "give", which could cause unecessary heat and more problems. I have repaired two cv boots with this stuff and while I was skeptical about it bonding and lasting, the guy is still runnning that same cv shaft. You can do this repair without removing the cv too, as did we.

Wow, they are really cheap on Rockauto. I see there's 3 different, but they are all rubber, right, not the OEM plastic type? Want to make sure I get the right ones.

Having shopped earlier this week, the whole shaft can be had from $49.99 to $109.99. Napa was the highest, and Vato Zone and Advance were tghe lower priced.
