Well I went out early this morning to snow plow. I came home to change for my regular job. When I went out to go to work my truck would not start. At first I tried cooling my pmd with no avail. It seemed that I was not getting fuel. I opened the water drain to check the lift pump and almost had my hand taken off because my truck started to crank on it's own with no key in the ignition. Cycling the key did nothing. I am assuming I have a bad ignition switch? Wondering what you think. If it is can I get it aftermarket or is it a dealer item only? What is involved in changing it? Thanks

It may be the dreaded PMD?

I don't think the pmd would cause the truck to crank on its own. Would it?

a pmd will not cause the starter to engage. doesnt have that capability. sounds like multiple issues, ignition switch and pmd? lp? bad or no glows?

pmd about a month old. It is an intake mount, I have the cable to re locate it just haven't done it yet. Just installed the glow plugs and injectors. I was able to get fuel the the water drain, so I believe the lift pump is ok. I got an ignition switch, hopefully that is all I need. I hope my starter survived because it was engaged for a while before I was able to disconnect the battery.

No it's not the PMD. How did you get it to stop cranking? Some possibilities...ignition switch or the starter solenoid . Check wire connection down at the starter solenoid . A chunk of ice could have fell into place making contact between the solenoid terminals.? Not likely but stranger things have happened. I kind of doubt the ign switch if the ON position works and the switch "feels" normal.

double check the wiring down by the starter. Possible the wiring might have got moved around when the GP's for the #8 cyl. was changed

The key did nothing when I cycled it while it was cranking. It had been sitting for about a half hour. I did notice that the ignition cyclinder was binding the past week. I thought it was because I had recently got a new key and it was a poor cut.

I disconnected the battery cable at the battery. I replaced the starter cable over the weekend. The end was corrode.

Well I would say that points to the ignition switch

That's what I'm hoping. I really love my truck but it is really starting to drive me nuts. I guess when it rains it pours!
