Hello,
I'm installing a second alternator in my Suburban, all I need now is the longer belt, and a definition of the pins on the alternator connection. Looks like the big lugs on the back of the alternator is for +12V and it's ground is through the case. Does the connector in question have 12 volts on it coming from the battery bank to start the field? I noticed that on the side of the connection it has P L I S

as you can see in the picture

Did you notice how the diagram stated how the white wire wasn't normally used, but since you have a diesel that is the tachometer sender, not that you'd need two of them.

Went to the local junkyard and found a connector and the only wire and pin it had on it goes to the pin labled L or the yellow wire in one of the links above. Guy at the junkyard said this goes to the exciter and turns on the alternator. He suggested that I just tie it in with the same wire on my other alternator. I'd like to keep the two systems seperate, maybe I'll use a relay. More time to research and think. Will post progress. You never know, someone with more experience may chime in, or someone else may decide to do the same type of mod.

asnowsquall, you might take a look at this link for some insight as to what the pins and wires are doing. Just a thought.

I installed the 2nd alternator and I'm in the process of having the cable made up to install. Fits perfect and looks good, just hope it works right. Will update when I fired it up after PMD relocation and other work.... Check out more pictures here http://asnowsquall.smugmug.com/gallery/307774/3/25980344

I've got two 115 aH deep cycles in the back and a 1500 watt inverter that will help heat WVO during the colder monthes. Basically experimenting. Will also use for camping, may get a trailer someday. Installed 18.5' of positive 2 AWG cable from the alt to the 1st battery today!
