: Blower Resistor question
dbaskette 02-13-2010, 11:02 AM So I've read multiple responses about the blower resistor, I want to make sure I am looking at the right thing. Under the glove box by the blower motor, with a pig tail plug. I could not find a picure of the 2005 set up.
Blower blows on 123 only, nothing on 4 and 5. 40 amp blower fuse looks fine. No sign of melting of the wiring.
I am no mechanic, and do not even play one on tv, but I do like playing around with my truck. Thanks
duramax_diesel_66 02-13-2010, 01:11 PM I have also read multiple responses about the blower motor and resistor. I have no fan speed 1-5 at all. Is this a problem with the resistor or the blower motor? Is the blower motor under the dash? or do i have to acess from the engine compartment??
heymccall 02-13-2010, 02:17 PM This thread tells the most http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=277135&highlight=resistor
But if you're not a mechanic, even on TV, this link from that thread shows Exactly where to look. http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/general-discussion/tech-articles-two/282919-how-nbs-blower-motor-resistor-replacement.html
And I just had an '05 come in that was left with the melted connnector too long, and it had actually melted it's own plug right into the blower motor itself.
And, if you haven't stayed at a Holiday Inn Express lately, here's a pic of it's location http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f295/kai1414/ResistorInstalled-1.jpg

Sounds like the resistor. Did you lose the speeds one at a time or all at once? My '03 lost 1 then 2 then 3 before I replaced the resistor and all was right with the world again.
dbaskette 02-13-2010, 04:40 PM So I replaced the resistor, checked the fuse, and inspected the wiring. Now I have speeds 1,2,3,and 4 but no 5. Any thoughts?

Blown 40 Amp fuse underhood, still.
dbaskette 02-13-2010, 05:31 PM 40 amp is good. this one has me stumped.
thanks

Does the relay click on high speed?
Easiest way to confirm is to leave it on High and turn the key on and off while having your finger on the resistor module.

Yes it does click on #5.
Thanks again

If it clicks on #5 (High), then either the 40amp under hood is bad or you've got something melted or .....
opcruzer 02-14-2010, 02:40 PM there aer two fuses one for speeds 1-4 and one for setting 5, but it sounds like the relay is clicking and you have speeds 1-4 so I would say make sure to check all fuses in both boxes (underhood and in cab) with a test light and go from there.

BLOWER Fuse 40A supplies +12V for HI Speed, (located in Underhood Fuse Center), is fuse #3 pages B-5, B-4, and D-27 below.
HTR/AC Fuse 30A supplies +12V to resistor module for speeds Lo-3, (located in Left BEC), is fuse #11 pages B-11, B-10, and D-29.

duramax_diesel_66 02-20-2010, 02:04 PM well replaced the resistor with no luck. All fuses are good. Do i have to take the blower motor out to test it ??
duramax_diesel_66 02-20-2010, 07:37 PM anyone??
sierradiesel 02-20-2010, 08:44 PM I don't think its the blower since it works at lower speeds. The resistor just changes the voltage across the blower to run it fast or slow.
In one of my trucks the darn fuse holder was screwed up.
Charlie B 02-20-2010, 09:09 PM When my blower motor quit working, I first thought it was the risistor but replacing the resistor did not work, I replaced the blower motor and everything was fine . The blower motor was not servicable but I took it apart anyway and the brushes in the motor were shot, ca put, no good. Charlie
PS. My blower motor only works on max when the re-circulating button is pushed.
Just my thoughts again
pj951 03-16-2010, 09:45 PM Here is another scenario:
My 2005 GMC with manual AC had lost one blower speed at a time, until only hi (5th) speed was left, over a period of the last two years. Can't believe the 5th speed was still working when I removed this blower resistor today:

I drilled a couple 1/8" holes in the bottom of the heater box until I figure out where the moisture is coming from. Never any visible leaks in the cab, coolant or otherwise. Hint: Use a very short drill bit if you should attempt this half-assed remedy. I'm suspecting condensation is the culprit here.

On these trucks, high speed passes through the relay on the resistor module, so, with high speed gone (or stuck on after key removal), it can still be the resistor module.
zr800 05-07-2010, 08:42 AM I was driving down the road with the windows down and the fan on 5 on heat (yeah Im cool). Thought there was a house fire somewhere until I realized there was smoke coming out of the windshield vents. Now no more #5. 1-4 work fine. Guess?

a new resistor and a wire harness end. somebody on here had the harness end for cheep but I don't remember who it is.
heymccall 05-07-2010, 12:03 PM Plug with pigtail (see Greg) http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3156484&postcount=20
nekkidhillbilly 05-09-2010, 02:27 PM i lost 2-3 on mine 1 4 and 5 worked it was the resistor replaced works fine. 20 bucks at advance.
zr800 10-04-2010, 11:45 AM I traded in my truck after purchasing but not installing the new wiring harness. If anyone wants it I will mail it to you for free. It is of no use to me and not worth returning for $12. send me a pm.
