I'm needing a hitch ball for my dads boat which loaded is about 12K. We tow it a few times a year to and from storage. Trailer takes a 2 5/16 ball and I have one laying around here but its not mark anywhere for the specifications. Just stamped USA on the base. Its a raw steel ball with a 1 1/4 shank. I have no problem spending the 30 bucks for a good ball, but I dont know if there are specifications like "If the ball has a 1 1/4 shaft its a minimum 12K ball or something stupid like that.

PS We used to borrow my uncles truck and his WDH setup but now that I have my truck were going to get our own setup.

With a shank size of that diameter, I would think that you are ok. I am sure others will chime in on here.....

Me personally without knowing, I would just buy a new one.
Like you said for $30 dollars knowing you have the proper set up is more then worth that little bit of time.

2-5/16" with a 1-1/4" (medium) shank is normally 12K. They can range from 10-30K based on material.

I have seen 2 5/16" balls with 1 1/4" shafts rated for as little as 7500#.

If you are setting up your tow vehicle, get a ball with a known and reliable rating.

Our boat weighed in a little over 11,000# and gradually over the years bent the insert that was the ball mount. I would not take a chance with the beast.:confuzeld
