Hi. This is my first post here, but I've been lurking for the better part of the last two years. I have to admit that the current pricing has me in the market for a new truck. I found a decent 2500 HD Ext. Cab D/A for roughly 33k after all the rebates/discounts. The only problem is I went to Ford and checked out the F250 and kinda like it. The Ford is about 3k more all said and done. I haven't gotten to drive the Duramax yet ( Im going now) so hopefully by tommorow I can make a decision. I know there have been alot of problems with the 6.0 , but they seem to have them squared away this year. I'm just a little concerned as I had terrible luck with my last GM product...

So what I guess I'm looking for is some decisive info that will sway we one way or another? Which one will last the longest? Which one gets better mileage? Which one is faster (I want to mess up m friend that bought a SS:ro)) What is the HP/Tq for both? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated....

Hi,

i suggest you try using the search (http://dieselplace.com/forum/search.php?) function as you will find lots of information. this question has been asked by many people before.

i suggest you go drive both trucks and buy the one you like the best. this being mostly a GM site, i doubt you'll find people that will tell you to buy the PSD. I bought a dmax in 2002, and i've never regretted that decision. i feel the same way every time i drive a PSD, but that is just my personal opinion. if you're looking to make it faster i believe the dmax has a better engine/trans combo for that.. but once again, that is JMHO...

If you're gonna buy the FORD, make sure you read up on the RECALL they just issued for the motor stalling. As far as which one will last the longest, that's a LOADED question, lots of factors come into play when asking that sort of question. It comes down to what makes you comfortable and puts a smile on your face when you're driving it! Good luck

Well I will chime in here, I own a F250 7.3 and now I also own a 3500 cc D/Max.:D I looked long and hard at replacing my Ford with another. I was even going to write off all the bad stuff I was reading to some isolated cases:badidea: . Well I work for a large department and everyone I spoke with has had problems with there 6.0 or the torqueshift. Hence my replacment is the new Chevy.I too asked questions on this site but had too search and call mechanics to get a just and varied opinon.Anyways the dmax has a smaller market share and the truck rides totally different then the Ford or dodge (my own opinion) But I really like it and the mechanics seem prety sound. Anyways good luck half the fun is shopping then buying toys for whatever you pick):h

I am in the same boat...

I like the looks of the Ford with the sport package. I think that is one great looking truck.

I like the interior of the GMC. And since that is where I will be living.

Right now for the same money, about 38K, I can get a SLE GMC with all the toys, 48K+ sticker, better resale, and a lower lease payment than the F250 with a 45K sticker...

I am going GMC.

Let us know what you decide.

Fords have a better looking exterior but it stops there. The interior and inside gadgets are much better in the GM. The Alison is way better and is a deciding factor when dealing with diesels. A diesel is only as good as its transmission! Although all three makers are having problems with the electronic injectors new technology, I think Ford is having more problems.

Now if we can just get the pirice of diesel back below regular!

Try all the diesels on the market and buy the one you like best. Hopefully you get one that simply got put together absolutely right. It's a crap shoot no matter which you buy since each manufacturer has produced some real peaches and some real turds. Good Luck.

Well, I just got back from test driving the Dmax. While I think it felt slightly faster, I must also say that I was test driving it myself as opposed to when I drove the Ford with the salesman. The main thing is that the Checy deal seems to only apply to what is on the lot, and at this time there is not much left. Add the higher interest rates from Chevy, and the extended warranty t bring it up to the PSD 5yr/100mi on the motor, they are close. Also, Chevy is beating me down on my 04' Dodge 1500 Crew trade in. I'm still up in the air. I guess I gotta sleep on it. If anyone has anything to add, please do so as I am a total over analyzer, and this decision is starting to stress me out...

If your dealer does not have what you want in his inventory he can also do a search of what other dealers have and generally locate what you are looking for and deliver it in a week or so.

shootemup, IIRC the Duramax also has a 100k mile warranty, the rest of the truck is 36/36 like most other brands. Dodge actually has a 7/70 on their powertrain IIRC, likely 100k on the Cummins as well.:o:

As for financing if you have access to a credit union or your local bank you can likely beat GMAC's rates. The dealers going to push you towards GM's financing to offset the beating they are taking right now. They'll usually match a credit unions rates just to push business toward the banks they do business with on a regular basis. Gather your intel and go in prepared or else? :sheephump It's all about money! ;)

I like the suggestion that you do your research, drive em both and buy the one that "fits the bill! Good luck! JJ :)

I just went through the same thing. I'm a Ford guy, my wife's even a bigger Ford guy (woman)!. We don't have problems with heavy duty use of our Fords, but we did with our GMs (prior to the HDs). So when we were looking for a new truck, we didn't even consider a GM (silly us). We drove the Dodge (a friend even bought one that was with us) and then we ordered a Ford. Well the special order showed up 10 weeks later and the dealer tried to screw us. Turned out to be a good thing, 'cause... the GM employee deal came out, and meanwhlie, some stuff a diehard GM guy who takes his beatings (mine included) on a FORD forum site was sinking in, he kept saying how GOOD these things were....

Well, a long story a bit longer is we now own a Chevy 3500 D/A. Sure I'd consider a Ford, if it was their '07. But from my short time with the truck we have, I doubt we will be looking anytime soon....! If you put the Cummins in the Ford chasis, then I may get the itch, but if you are spending your hard earned $$s today, there is no better value that the Duramax/Allison.

Good luck in YOUR decision!

Like Dan, I'm a huge Ford guy. However, I just bought a D/A over the 6.0. Ford has been buying back a ton of '05s. I even have a bigger incentive to buy Ford due to my "X Plan" pricing but the deals on GM are better right now and the bottom line is Ford is having problems and the fact that they are doing away with the 6.0 motor is an indicator of the trouble. The torqueshift, while a great concept, is problematic if you put any extra power to it. I speak from experience as I have owned the '04 6.0 and smoked 2 tranny's in 23k miles. Gm just has a better ride, deal, and a superior product currently. If you only knew how loyal a Ford owner I am you'd understand difficult this is to type!!!! Good luck and remember WHATEVER YOU DECIDE, DON'T BUY A DODGE!!!!!!!!!! :badidea:

I may be late, but hope you didn't buy the 6.0L Power(loss)stroke. They haven't fixed the problems yet and likely won't as they are dropping it after 07. I have had one for 2.5 years with 3 breakdowns on the road towing my 5th wheel. Just traded it off today. No Duramax's left in the area after employee pricing. Will try a Cummins 3500 for a while. Would not hit the road again in the 6.0L.

I too have historically been a Ford guy. Never owned a PS, but have had 3 Ford trucks. My last truck was my LAST Dodge. I liked it, but it nickel & dimed me to death. No motor probs, but everything else fell apart. I was originally going Ford for a diesel too, but my dad got a Duramax and I drove it. That's all it took. I'm extremely happy with my decision.

All that work keeping my 1500 in mint condition, for nothing, and I am still paying monthly payments on the 1500.
