Hello-
I am new to diagnosing trans problems... here is the background on my truck
Was on my way to work on the highway and my85 6.2 m1009 with th400 trans suddenly felt like it went into neutral but it was still in gear. I didn't hear a clunk or bang or anything. I thought I put it in neutral by accident. I pulled off the highway, put it in drive, and it only went into first gear and would not shift into second. I tried the lower gears but they wouldn't shift into second either. I checked the transfer case shift lever, it is in 2wd. The trans fluid is full and does not smell burnt. Prior to this it was shifting very smooth with no banging or flaring.
I have read about the governor maybe missing a gear, vacuum modulator not getting vacuum, or the valve body being stuck, I am going to check the governor this weekend, Can someone tell me how to check the valve body, modulator, and TV cable?
Thanks,
Bill

Paid $5 for 2 plastic gears (bought a backup) and a new gasket, 3.00 for a drill bit to drill out hole for the pin on the new gear. Total $8. Phone call to mechanic who wanted to charge me $1700 to tell them I don't trust them anymore............Priceless.

Was the gear broken off or worn out ?? If it was broke off check your u-joints vibration will cause that !!!!! also check for play up and down on the drive shaft yoke at the back of the tranny. !!!

it was worn down, while waiting at parts place spoke with a fella who rebuilds transmissions. he said that something else might be loose causing the wear and that it may wear out again. i will check the back of the trans. if loose, can I feel the play on the drive shaft yolk if I shake it with my hand?
thanks for your help, bill

this a 2-wheel drive???
Yes you will feel the up and down movement of the yoke . most times the seal will be starting leak . The bushing in the tail housing may be worn out . if so they are easy to change R & R shaft and then 6 bolts on tail housing . you will need seal and bushing .
if you do take the tail housing off there is one more thing you can do too the govner. With trans in netraul turn your output shaft forward and backward and watch how far your govern. moves in and out ward in the case . Then take a ballpen hammer and tap in on the center of the cover till there is little to no movement in and out . This "walking " of the govern. will also cause the gear to wear out . !!!!!
Hope this help's

beautiful! i love sticking it to them shops that want to charge you $100 an hour just to tell you a little pin sheared off or a gear wore out that costs you 7 bucks and you can fix it yourself.

Thanks for all your input revx1000. It is a 4x4, I looked at the back end of the trans and it connects right to the transfer case I think. I guess I will check the gov gear in a few thousand miles and see how it looks,
It is a military m1009 blazer that has very low miles, 29k. I was thinking maybe all the sitting had something to do with the gear wearing out. What do you think?

Most I have seen are from vibration or the govern. walking in and out of the bore. If they move to far out they will run on the end of the gear and wear out or even break off . being it's a 4x4 very hard to check that with out pulling the t-case. If it gives trouble again replace it and then tap in on the cover in the middle to bend it in a little . The thickness of the gasket will also affect it !!!
