: strange crank
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 12:19 PM ok what about this guys.. im stumped.... anyways ..my tahoe is doing somthing weird... when i go and start it. it turns over slow and if i keep trying to start it it will start to speed back up to like it should be with new batteries..... what could cause this... maybe a dragging starter... but why would it start to speed back up.... anyways let me know.. thnks
revx1000 02-09-2010, 01:02 PM Starter maybe
but do the cheap and easy stuff first check and clean all of the cables could be a loose or bad power wire to the starter or ground cable's
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 01:07 PM ya thats what i was thinking also..... i found some broke off ground wires and cleaned and put back on but it didnt change anything at all... nothing got brighter. so i think i have enough grounds through out the motor and crap....i have had slow starter before but never had them pick up speed . i took the batteries to napa and had them check them and they are good.....(still brand new) it doesnt matter what time of day or how many times i start and drive it. it still has a slow turn over but will slowley work up to the right speed and then start.....is there anything else i can check or do somthing.. im stumped.....plus its just me doing it so i cant get help
cheap9665 02-09-2010, 01:44 PM sounds like the starter motor is drawing excessive amperage when first activated, then as the engine becomes easier to spin it will spin faster. . . get it on a vat40 or equivalent and find out what your starter is actually
drawing for amps
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 01:46 PM a what.... vat40? whats that.... but that makes dang good sence to me.. thanks ya my starter has been making a vibrating sound at idle so im thinking its that....
cheap9665 02-09-2010, 01:49 PM vat 40. . . the basic starting point for any electrical system diagnosis. . . load test and read voltage and amperage. . . not a tech i take it, lifted??
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 01:51 PM ya i can do about anything. but ive never heard it called vat40..... im going to pull it today.. and put it on the bench and see what happens.. to bad they cost so much... but gotta do what you gotta do ................................... .. . . .
cheap9665 02-09-2010, 01:55 PM i hear ya, my starter makes a hell of a racket if the engine doesnt start 1st time, spins down and grinds. but (knock on wood) it hasnt failed me yet.
any input on my set up?? seems u have seen it all
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 01:57 PM your setup...........? . maybe its me today but i dont feel to smart i keep finding myself stuned that its sunny outside and the radio called for rain....... lol...........
cheap9665 02-09-2010, 02:00 PM well i have my wastegate wired closed, but my new boost gauge is only reading 10 psi at wot. . pyro only getting up to 100 so i cant complain to much. . . little confused as to y im not up to that 12-15 psi
vail426 02-09-2010, 02:07 PM Pyro is only reading 100*? How is that possible?
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 02:07 PM having you wastegate wired closed isnt the best thing for it..... mine is stock setup, all i did was took my upper intake off and honed it out opend it up let it breath......... im running 10psi wot... your about at the right psi. without getting a turbo master..... check to see if you have any cracks in the vac lines.....
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 02:08 PM to add to my last post..... im running 12 now after i got rid of my stock intake and made a new one...........
revx1000 02-09-2010, 02:10 PM i hear ya, my starter makes a hell of a racket if the engine doesnt start 1st time, spins down and grinds. but (knock on wood) it hasnt failed me yet.
any input on my set up?? seems u have seen it all
your brace is there on the back end of your starter ???
Sounds like a starter drive to me !!!!! watch it could grind up your flywheel (flexplate) .
also you could try to loosen the starter to re aline it. make sure you torque up the two front bolt's first before you do up the brace at the back of the starter
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 02:14 PM i dont have a brace yet.... never did.. i tried to re aline it .. didnt make any diffrence.... when i had the starter out along time ago i looked ot see if its been eating anything up and everything looked great.. i thought well maybe its the tin cover rattleing on top of it ... i pushed against it and couldnt get it to stop so thats were im at... its coming out today and im testing it....... hope everything is good.. cant afford another one yet....just dumped $500 into shocks, pmd,(with relocater)hid, glowplugs etc etc.... B R O K E
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 02:16 PM cheap you need to be carefull on that starter.. mine did the same thing 1time... and that time it did it, it fell on the ground... snapped the bolts off in the block.... had to drill and tap them out..... make sure your bolts are tight before you start that again.... can cause you to crack your ears off at the block then thats it....im going to make a bracket today since there is sunn outside...
cheap9665 02-09-2010, 02:44 PM correction, 1100 degrees. . . and the starter only spins down and makes that noise if the engine doesnt start, bolts are all def tight. took the vacuum actuator off and just wired the gate closed. . im not sure at what psi the
ecm de-fuels but its been a while since i have had that issue. of course its been winter here in wisconsin so i dont haul much hay
lifteddiesel 02-09-2010, 03:54 PM ok so i went out and cleaned allllll of the power wires at the battery.... and ground wires... still does it.. so i got a big hammmmer lol and before i did anything else i tried to start it still slow. so i tapped lol on the starter and then tried to start it again and it cranked fast and started right up.. hmmmmm leading to the starter if you ask me..... anybody on here getting rid of any 6.5 parts that hasnt posted it on the for sale yet??? sorry cheap for sounding pretttty dumb on the last quistions. lol... i have been outside in the sun and now im alll better..
cheap9665 02-09-2010, 04:49 PM hey i wish it was sunny here in wisconsin. . . . .nothin but snow. and where there is snow comes salt. . . .yes im a little sore about salt as im getting ready to replace my fuel supply line and sending unit that fell victim to the brown cancer. . . . well at least that will cure my aerated fuel issue
ak diesel drive 02-09-2010, 09:45 PM Rebuild that starter yourself. Sounds like brushes are worn. Get new brushes and a new bushing and pull apart the front bearing clean and regrease and your good to go.
lifteddiesel 02-10-2010, 11:47 AM thats what im thinking..... also would a 350sb starter fit and work great........
ak diesel drive 02-10-2010, 12:28 PM I doubt it would have enough ummph even if it would. I did just what I described about 40k ago and been working great ever since.
lifteddiesel 02-10-2010, 12:33 PM ya i didnt think it would have enough torque to turn these motors. just a thought....
cheap9665 02-10-2010, 01:12 PM think bout a cheap ebay starter???? most at least have some warranty
lifteddiesel 02-10-2010, 01:15 PM well im going to medford. its a huge city and im going to see if there are any at wrecking yards or see how much new one is. over there.....they want right under 300 bucks for a starter in my town... way to much for my..
cheap9665 02-10-2010, 01:19 PM my cost at the dealer i work at on a lifetime warranty gm starter is 350 + tax. . . . not a cheap piece but we all know it will last
lifteddiesel 02-10-2010, 01:27 PM ya i cant see spending that much on a starter.... since i just dont have the funds anymore... plus spending more money tomorrow for a long trip to take the wife and kids to see grandma 1 last time. if you get what i mean. so im pretty much broke.. i think ill just have to rebuild it.... and see what happens....... thanks though guys
ak diesel drive 02-10-2010, 02:06 PM I bought my parts at the local Napa and htey are usually pretty expensive and I still spent less than $40
Horse-Power 02-10-2010, 06:13 PM i hear ya, my starter makes a hell of a racket if the engine doesnt start 1st time, spins down and grinds. but (knock on wood) it hasnt failed me yet.
any input on my set up?? seems u have seen it all
Check your starter bolts, mine did that when i only had 1 bolt in it
