: Which Injectors to Buy?

I have 156K on my stock injectors, and am getting ready to replace them. There are several brands out there on several web sites from several suppliers.
Delphi, Bosch, Herzog, etc.
Every supplier insists their are the best (of course).
Any recommendations?
Any parts suppliers to steer clear of?
I have been looking at SS Diesel Supply and Kennedy.

Also, I am being advised by some suppliers that I need to change the glow plugs and lift pump at the same time since they have so many miles on them.

I call BS on the replacing the lift pump just because it has 150k on it. Test the pressure and volume on that. The glow plugs and injectors at the same time i would agree with. I have 2 set of medallion injectors from accurate diesel. I have had no problems with them[almost half the price of bosch]. I have heard many bad things about the "herzog" injectors. No personal experence with them. Very good rebuilt injectors can be better than new if the pop pressures are made the same and quality parts are used.
Bosch duraterms are`said to be the best glow plugs. They are available at napa and others. I have AC G60s and they require longer glow time. I had a set of walt's[ss diesel] glows. Not really any better than anything else. I didn't have them in long enough to see. how durable they are. I don't buy from walt because he make claims that his products[made by someone else] are so much better and that they have been tested[not]

Welcome!!!

x2 on testing the LP, depending on the year, you need to test the OPS also.

Also, put your signature with the data of your truck, especially the year.

Thanks for the tip on Napa having the glow plugs. I called, and they are cheaper there. I will check out Accurate Diesel for the injectors. Never been there.
Hopefully, they also sell the install kit with a turbo gasket.

I have one of Walt's lift pump pressure gauges installed. When running, the needle flickers back and forth rapidly between 3 and 5 psi. Not sure how to test volume.
I did buy one of Walt's earlier versions of his air filters. It came apart and flew into my turbo. Luckily, it did not do any damage. He was very good about responding quickly and replacing it with an updated version. It could be better quality. Thinking maybe of getting K&N.

3 to 5 psi during WOT (Wide Open Throttle)? or during idle?

Cheapest Bosch Duraterms is at RockAuto on the net. There is another thread down from you about GP problems, there is a way to search it in that thread.

supply pump gauge is at 3-5 psi at idle.
Gauge is mounted under the hood, so have not checked at wide open.
Dumb question - how does one open the throttle from under the hood since the accelerator is electric?

I checked, and NAPA can also order new Bosch injectors.
I am willing to pay for the best - if Bosch is indeed the best.
Looks like the injector socket by Snap-on is $50.00 - ouch.

Trust me, just test it with the gas pedal on see what the pressure is?

That is good that Napa can order it also. It is less than $8 each at Rock, so see if they can match it.

One more suggestion is to move the PMD outside the engine. You can use the current heatsink and everything just need to move it outside with an extension. Also make sure that the PMD ground is still on the IP. Some of the intake mounting direction told owner to move the ground on the heatsink, that is not good.

I'll check the PMD ground - can't recall Walt's directions - been a couple of years. Guess I should have gone with the Heath design. I'll check the posts under PMD for mounting ideas.

Looks like US Diesel Parts has the best price on new Bosch injectors- $43.62 ea.

My main motivation is to eliminate the problem I am having with very hard starting when it sits a few days. A LOT of blue smoke, and excessive cranking.
The engine feels like it is running on 2 cylinders and shakes in it's mounts like crazy until I rev it up a bit. I gotta keep this alive until they can figure out how to put a Duramax in a Suburban.

That is a good price for Bosch Injector.

You mentioned moving the whole PMD and heatsink assembly out on the front of the truck somehow. Got any photos of what that may look like?
I am not seeing anywhere that would look pretty and out of the way of any road debris, etc. I have the SSD heat sink with the fins.
Heck, maybe I should mount it under my wife's seat so she could have heated seats...
Too bad GM didn't put some sort of cowl induction vents in the hood.
It would increase airflow, and let the heat out after shutting down.

I put it in my bumper but I have a non stock bumper (can see in my garage how my bumper looks). Some people puts it behind the license plate inside the bumper if they have stock bumper. It is just a mounting point, nothing special. This part is non-mechanical, nothing is moving so it does not matter. The only condition is that the ambient temperature after shutdown is lower than the temp generated by the heat of the PMD. So the Heatsink can dissipate heat instead of absorbing the heat.

As I said, you can use the existing heatsink. Now, if it is already heat damaged, it won't reverse the damage but it may buy you a little bit more time. Walt swears by that location but a lot of people comes here with PMD issue, turns out they need to buy another one from him. Guess how many went back to him?

Maybe I can mount it on the skid plate - won't look pretty, but it will be in the airstream going down the road.

Cheapswede, if you are still looking for injector. I got some new Bosch from RockAuto for some cents above $40 shipped.

Search by part no. 0432217276 and mfg = Bosch.

Cool. I'll take a look.
I was going to order them tomorrow. I ordered the injector install kit and a Fumoto oil drain plug/valve from Kennedy. Apparently, I also need to buy a bosch injector socket from Snap-on.
Hope those aren't made in China yet.

JMJ- Nice purdy bumper you have there. Nicest one I have seen. Where did ya get it? Looks like you could whomp a few stray cows in the road with it.
Also, where's the best place to get 4" exhaust for a Suburban? I don;t really want to bother with modifying or bending anything if possible. I HATE exhaust work. especially since I only have a plumber's butane torch - no welding gear.

All the details in my signature for exhaust.

I bought the it with that bumper already. Used to be a fire chief firetruck. Body is not too preety, a lot of patches but it runs good.

After hours of searching and calling around, I came to the conclusion that tvdiesel.com currently has the best price on a diamond eye suburban exhaust system $275.00 incl muffler. Free shipping.

I finally got the new Duratherm glow plugs and Bosch injectors in. I didn't even have to remove the turbo or the wheel well. Using the Snap-on injector socket, you can slip an open ended wrench on it in the tight areas around the exhaust manifold.
I did find that there were two glow plug connectors left dangling by the last shop I had it in. It was the two that run inside the tubular heat shields. I guess they got lazy and didn't take the time to remove and replace the heat shields. I guess I will just have to do all of my own repairs. That may explain the rough and smoky cold starts.

Now you may want to move that manifold mounted PMD cooling kit outside the hood?

cheapswede
03-06-2010, 03:54 PM
Yeah..
Just trying to decide where.
I need to get an extension harness.
I do have the ground on the heat sink, so I guess I need to put that back where it was.

Then comes the 4" exhaust. Too many projects going on.

Just get it from pmdcable. He sells at ebay also.

This one is more urgent than exhaust. Not too difficult to do.

OK I checked, and I have a ground wire from the stock PMD cable going to Walt's cooling fins.
See photos on his website http://www.ssdieselsupply.com/product_6_GM_6.5_Diesel_FSD_HeatSync_kit.html#anch or_pimage

I ordered an extension cable from PMDCable.com today. Where should I mount this ground wire when I move the cooling assembly behind the license plate in the bumper?

Dumb question: Does the arrangement of the fuel return hoses matter any (which hose connects to which nipple)? I just capped off the end one like it was, and ran the hoses to from one nipple to the closest nipple on the next injector. Some of the injectors torqued-down with the nipple vertical, others horizontal.

OK. I bought an extension harness from PMD cable, and found s nice spot on the bumper below the license plate holder.
I am trying to locate the original screw on top of the injection pump for the ground on the cable, but can't tell which one. Is it one of the torx screws? I had moved mine to Watl's heat sink a few years back, and cannot recall where it was originally.
