: BFG AT's 285/65/18 HELP!
msievz7 06-20-2005, 10:48 AM Does anyone know where I can find a set of these tires? I know they are on backorder, but I thought someone may know where I could find a set. I've tried all the major vendors, tirerack, NTB, autotire, etc. If ANYONE knows where I can find these, pm or email me at mark.sievers@sieversequipment.com. I would even consider a used set if someone had them. thanks,
sievz
Cummins600 06-20-2005, 10:55 AM I tried to get them too......waited for about four months with an order placed at a local tire dealer, Tire Barn and Big O Tire. BFGoodrich would not even give them an estimated ship date. -:t I thought that was odd. So I put in an order for the Toyo Open Country AT's in 325/60/18 (a little taller) I still had to wait six weeks...but at least I got them. I have never owned any tire other than the BFG TA/KO's (unless the truck came with it)....but so far I am pretty impressed with the Toyo's. I am not sure if I will get the mileage out of them though.
msievz7 06-20-2005, 11:09 AM I'd like to see some pics of that combo if you had them.
Cummins600 06-20-2005, 05:58 PM Sure thing, I am working late the next couple nights (4:30a to 10:30p), but I can try to get them posted first thing on Wed. if that works out.
msievz7 06-21-2005, 10:22 AM sounds good!
Cummins600 06-22-2005, 10:35 AM Here are the pics of the tires and rims. I posted some pics on the Dodge Cummins forum "Pics Please" They should be some of the first ones if you're interested in seeing them on a truck. My truck has only a 2" level kit, and they fit with a lot of extra space. The tires are little bigger in diameter than the BFG's, so I don't think that will affect you. I had a 1/2 ton Silverado that I put the 285's BFG's on with only cranking down on the torsion bars a couple turns, so I would assume that these would still fit well. The only thing I did run into was the offset on the rims. This caused a little problem with my mud flaps and front lower bumper trim piece. If I had been able to find something with my offset I am sure I would have had no problems. Anyway, hope this helps.
msievz7 06-23-2005, 10:14 AM Thanks for the pics....that is a good looking combo. I actually decided to go with 285/60/18 Nitto Terra Grapplers on MOTO Metal 951's chrome. I think they look pretty sick....I'll put up some pics when I get a chance. I get a little rubbing on the driver's side mud flap, but other than that, they fit good.

BigRedD/A 06-23-2005, 10:30 AM Sears!
Cummins600 06-24-2005, 03:43 PM I was looking at the Motto 951's too. However there are already a couple trucks running around with that set-up, so this is a little different. I would like to see your pics when you get everything set-up. By the way, my tires rub the mu-flaps too. I made brackets out of aluminum and then pop-riveted the mud-flap to the bracket, then attached the mud-flap and bracket. The brackets worked great to keep the in place and away from the tires. If you would like, I could post a pic or two to give you an idea. Hope you enjoy the new tires and rims!!!
BIG DIPPER 06-25-2005, 03:23 PM Cummins600....could I trouble you to post us a picture that would help get an idea of the width? I remember seeing pics of the Nitto tires in the same size and they seemed extremely wide....yours don't appear to be that way. Thanks.
BIG DIPPER 06-25-2005, 06:00 PM I found pics of the Toyos as well......just seem too wide for me. Thanks.

BansheeBruce 06-27-2005, 01:21 PM Those Toyo & Nitto 285/60/18 are only rated for 2,800 lbs. I would not be comfortable with that if you are towing heavy. The BFG 285/65/18 is rated over 3,000 lbs and is a much better tire if you can find it. Does anyone have these?
phatty 06-27-2005, 05:37 PM I found a dealer with 3 of the tires. But he wanted rights to my first born child for them... And he couldnt find me a fourth tire... So good luck
Kartattack 06-27-2005, 10:19 PM The Terra Grapplers are rated higher than the stock tires!
*285/60 R18 120S 13.1 31.38 11.54 8.0-(8.5)-10.0 3086@50
BansheeBruce 06-28-2005, 12:06 PM The stock tire has an "E" rating, 65 psi and more plys. According to that, it should be a stronger tire. Anyone?
Cummins600 06-28-2005, 01:52 PM Hey guys sorry for the delay. I am at work and was gone all weekend. I will post some pics tonight. To answer the questions, yes they are wide....about 14.5 inches mounted on an 18x9 rim. Also, the spec sheet I looked at said they had a load rating of about 3100 lbs @ 50psi. The stock tires, BFG Rugged Trails, an E load rated tire were 3195 lbs @ 70psi. So I thought I would be able to handle anything I had before.
Dmax Tim 06-28-2005, 06:55 PM The stock tire has an "E" rating, 65 psi and more plys. According to that, it should be a stronger tire. Anyone?
The load capacity of the tire is what matters, as long as it is higher than stock run it.
The larger tires have a larger airvolume so less heat is created.
Lower air pressure gives them a better ride @ max capacity too.

That is NOT true. Nitto Terra Grapplers are rated 3.086 lbs at 50 psi - try to run that BFG at 50 psi and carry more than 3.000 lbs.
I looked at the BFG as well and could not get them. I wanted them just for looks. I finally got a little smaller but much cheaper and better performing tire in the rain - happy I did.:ro)
BansheeBruce 06-29-2005, 08:54 AM Hey Mahalkita, Do you do heavy towing with those Nittos?
phatty 06-29-2005, 06:30 PM FOUND SOME BFGs 285/65/18 KO A/T TIRES... Would you all like to know where you can get some???
Ok well Just on a whim (ok actually I saw a sign on the front of the shop that says "if we cant get your tire in 2 weeks its free!") I thought Sweet free set of BFGs, but nopethey had some that could be shipped in overnight. $280 a tire
Well anyways thats way overpriced but for you rich boyz check out your local
PEP BOYS shop...
Also BFG says the will start production on these tires again in August
Cummins600 06-29-2005, 08:13 PM Here is about the only way to really get an idea of the size difference. no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get an accurate reflection of how wide these are. So I took a pic from before, one after and then the last that has the tread width. Just in case you all wanted to see.
BlueOx03 06-29-2005, 08:40 PM Cummins600, do those clear water and mud good, or do they throw stuff all over your truck?
Cummins600 07-04-2005, 12:47 AM Sorry, I used to get on here all the time. The tires do throw a bunch of sh*t all over the truck. That is why I put on the fender flares. I noticed that white rock (which there is a bunch of at work) gets stuck in the tread and then flies out at 55 mph. Why I put the mud flaps back on over the fender flares!! They do clean out pretty good too in the mud, however I haven't played much here as the weather has been hot and dry for about 5 weeks. If I didn't have black I might have hesitated with the flares as the color wouldn't show the scratches as bad, but flying rocks can quickly make light work of a black paint job (experience speaking!!) I am still pretty impressed with the ride and lack of road noise for the tread these things have!!
mahalkita 07-05-2005, 02:01 AM Hey Mahalkita, Do you do heavy towing with those Nittos?
No towing with my truck so far. Sorry I cannot give you a good answer!
Motohead 07-06-2005, 09:48 PM I wish the tire companies would get this straight. E D C or simple load rating?
What is most important??? I was all set to get 285/60/18 toyos and when I talked to a Toyo Rep on the phone he told me these where only 4-ply tires and would be a missapplication. Load rating was higher than stock load range E's??? I had plenty of folks tell me they would be fine...I just figured I could not take that risk towing a 12000lb trailer 65mph. I had a tire dealer call Toyo and He got two different answers!

The Toyo Open Country in that size have the same specs than my Nittos:
285/60/18 120S
Whatever plies they have told you - the load index of 120 means indeed 3086 pounds, the speed index S means approved up to 180 km/h (112.5 miles/h)
So you should be on the save side with the Toyos - I paid 168 $ for my Nittos (each)
