: Limp mode? with new dsp5 and tunes
smitty91 02-07-2010, 10:35 PM I recently upgraded my 06 lbz from a bullydog powerpup hand held programmer to a dsp5 switch with 5 tunes from nick@duramaxtuner. I told him i wanted a stock tune, tow tune, smoke tune, mid hp tune, and high hp tune. He gave me all of those and they work awesome. I also told him that I had a ad150 lift pump, egr blocker, boost stick, and a suncoast stage iv kit tranny. However I don't have the suncoast installed yet so I just told him I already did thinking it wouldn't cause any problems. So he made the changes to my ecm and tcm and emailed me back the tunes. Again, everything works perfect except for one problem. At any given time, usually when the engine is cold, it seems like it goes into limp mode. However, I know its not limp mode because with limp mode it won't go over 30 mph or whatever. What happens is I will be driving on any of the 5 tunes and out of the blue it will go to shit like someone flipped a switch. It seems like anything over 1/16th throttle is no more powerful than 1/16th throttle. If I floor it from a stop, it will not come even close to breaking the tires loose and take about a full mile to get up to 70 mph. I called nick and he looked over the tunes and said they were good, so I am wondering if I am having these problems because I don't have the suncoast in yet since he tuned the tcm thinking that I did? I am lost and it is driving me insane because it is not safe to drive like this. Thanks in advance
boccheballs 02-08-2010, 12:06 AM do you have the v2 flashscan? if so you need to log some driving and also log the dsp5 pos. and voltage to make sure your switch is working properly. when did you change the fuel filter and also the allison spin on?
smitty91 02-08-2010, 12:50 AM Yes I do have the efi v2 i was just hoping it was more of a simple fix that i wouldn't have to log it. So you think it might be the switch? I don't think it is because when i first installed the tunes and switch, one of the pins wasn't seated properly so the switch didn't work at all and it was just stuck on the highest hp tune, but it would still randomly go into this "weird mode." I changed the fuel filter 600 miles ago and can't remember the last time I changed the tranny spin on it was probably too long. But even then how would that cause this problem. If the spin on was the problem, then wouldn't I have had this problem with the bullydog power pup as well? Thanks again
boccheballs 02-08-2010, 01:28 AM Ya It Seems You Would Have. So If It Was Defaulting To The Highest Hp Tune....that Would Be Your Base Tune Correct? It Should Defalut To Your Base Tune On Mine That Would Be Modified Stock Course It Can Be Set Up In Any Way..mine Is 1. Stock 2. 50hp And So On To 5. 130hp
smitty91 02-08-2010, 01:03 PM yes the number 1 tune is my high hp tune so when the switch wasn't working it just stayed on the number one tune aka the high hp tune. But I still don't think the switch has anything to do with the problem i'm having.
b_r_a_d_79 02-08-2010, 03:16 PM i think i am having some simialar problems. but i do not have the switch. just the v2. does it just randomly fall on its face and sometimes not go over 2000 rpms?

Not going over 2000 rpms is an engine limp. Normally the CEL will be on and it will have a code. My truck goes into the engine limp when I get a P0087 Low fuel rail pressure code.
Do either of you have any lights on or codes when the trucks are doing this?
b_r_a_d_79 02-08-2010, 04:54 PM i do get the low rail press code can i just turn that off on efi live and fix that?
smitty91 02-08-2010, 08:17 PM Yea lucky for you sounds like you just need a shim kit. I'm getting no codes and it will rev up to redline it just takes a very long time, even in neutral.
smitty91 02-08-2010, 09:46 PM Well I just tried uploading the stock tcm tune and that didn't change anything. It's still going into "weird mode." Does that the problem has to be within the tune?

i have the ppe race valve and still does it on stock tune
smitty91 02-08-2010, 11:15 PM Yea but yours throws a code and wont rev past a certain rpm, correct?

search bottle test, almost sounds like your race valve is tightened enough and its letting fuel past it.
Yea but yours throws a code and wont rev past a certain rpm, correct?
Does it do it if you load your stock tune?
smitty91 02-09-2010, 12:12 AM Well I thought that I read somewhere that once you have converted to dsp5 tunes, you cannot just flash the stock tune in to go back to stock. If this isn't true, then i'll try flashing the stock tune in. If it works and the problem doesn't happen on the stock tune, then does this mean the problem is within the tune?
boccheballs 02-09-2010, 08:21 AM you just must do a full flash cause your changing your os.
vortecfcar 02-09-2010, 08:35 AM It's hard to tell who this is by the screen name. If I knew, I'd look up the tune to verify.
It sounds like the EGR is turned off without the addition of an EGR blockoff plate. If this is the case, try returning all of your EGR settings to stock or installing a blockoff plate (engine operation-> EGR->Parameters, desired flow at all altitudes).
Nick
smitty91 02-09-2010, 01:05 PM Yea I'll try reflashing to stock but i'm 99% sure the problem will go away. Thats why it leads me to believe the problem is within the tune. Hey nick its walker smith and I DO have the egr blocker plate and a boost stick. I have everything aftermarket I told you except for the suncoast kit because I haven't installed it yet. But obviously that doesn't matter because I just reflashed the stock tune and the problem remains. I't doesn't make any sense to me.
vortecfcar 02-10-2010, 09:51 AM So the problem persists with the stock tune?
Give me a call Walker, I'll be on the road most of the morning today.

smitty91 02-11-2010, 11:41 AM Here's about a 10 minute log of the truck going into weird mode. Its normal for about the first 2 minutes and then all of a sudden goes into this mode like someone flipped a switch. I already sent the file to Nick but just thought i'd post it up to see if anyone else could see what the problem is. Thanks in advance.

I'm having the EXACT same issue. The limp happens about 3 miles after I start driving, and will go away anywhere between 1-10 miles later.
In mine, when I'm WOT, it will go up to about 2500 rpm but will be just barely accelerating.
Today I noticed it was in "limp" for about 10 seconds, followed by 5 seconds of normal, followed by "limp" again, it cycled about 5 times like that.
I'm going on vacation and won't have time to get to my tuner but I'm positive we're having the same issue.
8100 Power 03-14-2010, 01:17 AM I had this issue on a friends LMM after I installed a DPF Delete tune for him, it was the fuel filter, replaced it and no limp mode. His would limit right to 2000K after a hard stomp and go.

I'm going to change mine just to be sure, but I've been thinking since it is intermittent that that wasn't the issue. I'll try to get it done tomorrow.
JD4440 03-14-2010, 11:14 AM I have a friend that expressed similar problems and it was the switch acting up. might check the install on the switch
smitty91 03-15-2010, 01:02 AM I'm sorry i haven't reported back but i was busy and then forgot. The problem was the tune. i flashed a completely different tune and it worked. I have no idea how that makes sense and works but it does and fixed the problem

Good to know, I talked to my tuner and he said maybe it has to do with the OS version ?? I'm going on vacation right away but as soon as I can meet up with him I'll report back.
I did change the fuel filter today, ( still limped) so now I'm wondering if I should hang on to the one I pulled out of there. It only had about 3k miles on it. Or should I suck it up and toss it?
smitty91 03-15-2010, 01:05 PM Yea it is a very uncommon problem and im not completely certain as to what the cause it, but I had Nick build me the tunes and he said that he thinks the problem might have been MY stock tune that he modified for some reason. We ended up taking another guy's tune that he did and modifying it to what I wanted. I would reuse the filter if i was you because it obviously isn't the problem.
cumminsDK 03-15-2010, 07:32 PM I had similar problems with an 06 LLY. pulled the tune modified it ran great and got great mileage but kept limping. Full Flashed the stock tune back in, then read it again re-saved, and modified again and no problems.
vortecfcar 03-16-2010, 10:50 PM Smitty91's problem was a very rare issue that was not a 'limp mode' in the traditional sense of the phrase. When I upgraded his stock tune to DSP5, something went corrupt in the file and caused the MAF flow to register much lower than actual, which put the truck in a fuel limiting scenario. I've only seen it twice; building the tune again from scratch starting with another similar stock tune on the same O.S. fixed it both times.
Just an update,
Nick
