: Tug-Of-War!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nitrous_nate 06-20-2005, 01:08 AM I don't know if you guy's have these at your pulls, but the last 2 at this place has tug o war at the end of the pulling in the middle of the track. CRAZY is all I have to say. The only thing that gets me is there is this 01 dodge with normal bfg a/t, ext. cab, long bed, 4x4. The truck seems to be stock and does not smoke any. He can out pull or drag anyone he hooks to in the tug of war. He finished 3rd behind me in the sled pull about 20ft. back, but I cannot figure it out????? My buddy's truck has about 450 rwhp and is ext. cab dmax 4x4 with bfg a/t's and he tried to pull this guy and 1st pull dodge had slight down hill pull he(dodge) pulled him about 6" past marker after about 20sec. of constant tugging. Switched sides with dmax down hill. They sit there for what seemed forever and finally they stopped them. It was called a tie so the dodge took the win since he out pulled the 1st tug. I cannot believe this!!!!!!! We cannot firgure out how this guy is doing this. If anyone has any tips or could know what he could be doing please let me know. This cummins has to be stopped!!!!!! I am very new to the pulling scene so what I know I have learned on this site. This guy has been pulling for a while and has ego running out his ear's if you know what I mean. Let me know what is up please if you know or can help I am:confused: -:t BADD!!!!!!!!
Dmax Tim 06-20-2005, 08:37 AM It takes traction, do they weigh the trucks?
The more weight the better.
If u just set there w/ brakes on all wheels are locked and let them spin there tires especially if the don't have both axles locked.
Then ease into the fuel and drag them off.
Spinning tires don't have traction.
heartbeatcanada 06-20-2005, 08:39 AM Tug of war don't mean squat. More hp actually hurts as it will be harder to get traction, once traction is broke, its pretty much game over. Also hooking height plays a big part. If the dodge has a higher hooking point, basicaly he's pulling the rear of the other truck up, making the other truck have very minimal traction on the rear tires.
BullydogPowered 06-20-2005, 08:59 AM good call heartbeat, i would say theres the answer
Leadfoot 06-20-2005, 11:17 AM Remember this: Traction first, then power.
Hitch height, WEIGHT, effective gearing (tranny, t-case, R&P, and tire height all play a role), wheelbase (leverage), tire width (wider isn't always better.....depends on surface media), tread design, and finally power. Power can help compensate for lack of gearing, but it does no good when you break traction...
To make it even (or as even as possible), they should do what they do for truck pulls: Set a maximum weight and hitch height. Those that have a lower hitch or less weight will be at a disadvantage (but that is their own doing). Then depending on power it will be who has the best traction and gearing that will win. FWIW

nick04duramax 06-20-2005, 11:40 AM When I did tug of war with my 78 gas it seemed that the lower the gear the better. As the others stated you don't want wheel speed just slow turning traction. Also unless your pulling against a seasoned puller usually the guy who gets the jump at the start wins. One thing that is always fun is to hook on kind of an angle and that will cause whoever has the slower take of to slide sideways a little which means loss of traction. It will cause the guy to panic usually and floor his truck causing more loss of traction, but this only works if you are the one pulling him sideways. Good luck and look for the tire ruts from the last guys, don't position the truck where it will fall back into ruts but rather right on the edge of falling into ruts that way the rut will basically pull you into the lead and he will work that muck harder to get you out, this is when I like to just feather the pedal in 4lo 1st it really pisses the losing guy off. AS far as the weight goes its just like sledding you want the weight as far forward as possible because once you take off you will have plenty of weight on the back as long as hitch height is right. The best place for hitches is directly in the center of the frame rails good luck.
Burnin Mad Max 07-13-2005, 12:55 AM It sounds to me like the guy knows what he's doinmg as well. Tug-o-war don't mean nothing. I've seen half ton trucks draw with 2500 diesels before. Traction is the key more so than power.

Take an 8" drop and flip it upside down and see how that works!
Joey D 08-01-2005, 11:34 AM I did this at a truck show in VT and won for 4 years in a row. It is more driver than anything. I pulled high powered Cummins trucks, gas motors big and small V10's and even a Mercedes Unimog. Just ease into it and give it just enough power to not spin the tires and once the other truck starts to move backwards roll into it. My truck is far from a powerfull diesel.
McRat 08-01-2005, 11:54 AM If the chain is more than 6' long, hitch height won't mean much. The longer the chain, the less it means.
#1 factor here is going to be weight. Go as heavy as you can. #2 factor is going to be footprint. Drop your tire pressure as low as you can.
If you have a 10,000lb truck with flat tires, it would take a bulldozer to move it. :D
countrycoach 08-01-2005, 10:02 PM We pull on concrete here in NC twice a year! Makes for great grudge matches and lots of tire smoke when someone breaks traction. But depending on what you are pulling on is what makes the diff. If you are pulling on dirt I would get a tire that will burry its self real quick. It is hard to pull a truck out of a rut! In the dirt it will have to be the one with the quickest foot. Skinnyer tires would do better because it will dig the loose stuff out quickly and get you a rut to where he can't pull you back, but yet you will have hard stuff to get traction on.
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 08-14-2005, 11:40 PM Got into an argument with an idiot on this topic. I'd just won the truck in town and was at the street dance afterwards. He's a big Ford guy, I asked what he thought of the Chevy today. He preceded to tell he wasn't impressed (even though I put 35ft. on 2nd place) He said he'd hook up to me in a tug of war and drag me all over the place. He has a single cab, lifted, PSD with 35" tires. I told him he'd never be able to do it. My truck weighs in at over 9500lbs. with extra in it. He said torque would win. I couldn't get through his mellon-head that whoever had the most traction would win and it'd be pointless. Some people..... I was about ready to hit him for being so dumb. Plus we argued about other stuff - he's an idiot - couldn't tell him anything.
