How 'bout switching the block & pistons & keep the top end?
Remember, van turbo is in engine valley, and trucks aren't.

Power would go down but mileage may actually improve under normal driving conditions.

Switch the 6.5L n/a longblock for the bad one, bolt the rest of your 6.5L turbo stuff to it, including timing cover and waterpump, heads, ect.

are turbo and non-turbo models the same in the long block? I'm used to seeing NA engines have higher compression than turbo models... is this true in the 6.5?

You can't use the N/A engine in this application. You would get about 90% of the way completed during the shortblock swap (this is using the turbo on the N/A shortblock) and find out that the appropriate turbo mounts probably won't be there and the turbo oil drain location will also be missing. You're best off finding another van/hummer engine for this vehicle.

Where is the turbo oil drain on a van, in the valley? It might be possible to route it to the fuel pump cover area.
