Hey guys,

Another great site with loads of information. Fantastic.. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif - I have a question about the AFE stage II or any intake for that matter. If you change your intake but you don't do anything to the exhaust are your EGT's going to climb - You know, air in, but not getting it out..?

Thanks

I dont think it willl have a measureable effect, but I am not running one so cant answer for sure.

I was going to buy one but the vendor told me realistically getting a good aftermarket air filter would be just as, if not more beneficial than the AFE 2, unless you like it for the cool factor. For me, the money it cost was cooler than the Stage 2. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

And once upon a time, someone did a HP test with NO air filter at all and then with a K&N I beleive, and the difference in HP was neglegible. I can not find the reference to that though, so please dont talk bad about me for 10 pages! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Just kiddin.

I have heard that more turbo noise with the AFE

I run my OEM for up to 39,000 then changed to the Stage 2. I did not see any diffrence in the EGT's............untill the Quad! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I don't know that the hp or ft. lbs. changed that much, but love that whine. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Some say that it spools up faster.....I justs thinks you can just hear it better, so you think it is. You know like a lounder exaust!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

I will be going with a 4" exhaust to lower EGT's soon, I hope!

can your really hear the turbo that much more? That would be enough of a reason for me to get the stage II! I miss the trubo whine I had on my dodge when I took the baffel out of the turbo. How about the "swiss cheese" effect? Know if you can hear the trubo more?

You will not see much if any more hp/tq with an air cleaner on a dyno. But in real world you may see 15hp more. On a dyno you are not forcing air into the engine, so it will not make much difference what type of filter you have.

Mike; The stage II AFE will make the turbo several times louder then stock.

Woooooooo Doggie ............ with the stage 2 the whine will be so loud you'll have your neighbors turnin' their heads.

If you want to hear the turbo, AFE stage II .......

Mike,
Good point about the dyno not "forcing air".

I will get a Stage 2 eventually, but it is down on the list behind a few "other" toys http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

If like hearing your turbo spool up then the afe is the intake for you. Even if it added nothing at all the sound alone is worth the price. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif

The Stage 2 does add a little turbo noise but you have to keep it clean to work the best. They are around $235.00

Has anyone run one of these long enough to get an oil analysis and find out if in addition to looking good and permitting the turbo to whistle away they actually also filter the air?

No I never sampled till I installed my AFE .... I too was concerened that with all the negative post on Gauze filters that I was taking a big chance in increased dirt inlet resulting in high wear metal count ....

Seems it isn't so ....

How much of a difference does it make if you live in a dusty climate such as vegas? Would I have to worry more about dust getting in my engine? If all my driving is on the pavement, how often do I need to clean it?

Here is the last test I have with my OEM air filter. It was new at first of the last test. Test_08-14-03.zip (http://dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/Test_08-14-03.zip)

The middle test, I think, was from dirt in my Fomoto valve! Also George recomended that I change the air filter, and check for leaks. I'm hoping that I can get into the single digits. That is where it needs to be! The last change was cleaned good and taken mid way through the drain.

I put my AFE on at my last oil change but only have 2k on the oil so far. I do the oil change at 7k, and at that time I will be putting on the Ricor by-pass filter.Edited by: cmadmaxman

your install of the AFE looks good. I put mine on last weekend and it barely fit. Its on and works great, but I can't get my intake tube to bolt on to the box. (using the bolt with the big rubber washer). Do you have any tricks?

Leave everything loose except the metal box .... You should be able to turn (twist) it on,in place ..... I've gotten quite use to it ...

Who has cleaned these filters with any success ?? I went and ordered a new Magnum Force element and sock while I experiment ....

I installed my AFE Stage 2 last night. At first I could not tell much difference. Power seemed about the same, and it was no where near as loud as I was expecting. Gas milage seemed up perhaps 1mph, but I won't know for sure until the tank is used up.

Then I went to the spot where I usually test my 0-60 (actually 0-72 - phone poll to phone poll). No power breaking, just hitting it from idle. Usually I get a little tire spin, then the boost comes up, and it hooks up and takes off. This time I was expecting similar results. I hit the gas, and the truck didn't move. It just sat there and spun the tires so fast it shifted into 2nd, and I was still sitting in the same spot. Cars were coming, so I backed out of it until I had traction back, and then went to 3/4 throttle. Same results.....Nothing but spinning tires.

Perhaps it is because the roads and my tires are colder now that fall is here. Perhaps I didn't gain any more peak horsepower, but I can say for sure that the spool-up time is greatly reduced, and you've gotta love that sound.

Even with the pathetic launch, I still hit 72mph by the second phone poll. Sorry no g-tech or here.

And Others .....

We personally tested the AFE stage II on the dyno ..... NO HP gain was yielded.... The only benifit is faster spool up which the seat of yours or others pants would say it's more HP but .....

I was told it is for duster climates .... It does reduce CFM but if you are driving a dirt road every day ,I go for it ....I wish I had the exact numbers ,I was told, but I can't remember ... It's some where around a 100 or more Cfm's lost .... But still considered a excellant flow ....
