: upgraded trans cooler 06 lbz
jettech 02-05-2010, 04:10 PM I asked this in the aftermarket allison section and no response so I'll try here.
Whats the best options for an upgraded trans cooler for an 06 lbz. I've seen the ppe one $400 + is a bit steep.
LtEng5 02-05-2010, 06:03 PM Contact Mike L. on here...He's a vendor here and very good to deal with
jettech 02-05-2010, 06:16 PM I sent him an email and pm, waiting to see what he's got.
enahs 02-05-2010, 11:35 PM Call, don't email. And, yes, his cooler woks very well.
jettech 02-06-2010, 05:05 PM Mike L. didn't have any in stock and wasn't sure how long it would be till he did. From my research it sounds like the PPE and Suncoast coolers are of the same exact design and not really any different in price than Mike's so it looks like I just need to pony up.
jettech 02-06-2010, 07:33 PM ok,so I'm looking at the pictures of the PPE cooler and the ports for the lines and it shows them coming out of the bottom(verticle) but my stock cooler has the lines coming out the front of the cooler (horizontal). How does this make it a direct replacement ? Does it come with 90 degree adapters or am I missing something ?
chevyman_2000 02-06-2010, 07:44 PM Mike L is a very respected memeber and vendor on the site. I'm sure alot of guys including Mike would prefer u order from him. He brings alot to the site.

jettech 02-06-2010, 08:11 PM I would too, but if he doesn't have them and doesn't know when he will I've got no other choice. And I am looking at one from another supporting vendor. Everything in my sig except for the cb and pioneer hu were all bought through supporting vendors.
chevyman_2000 02-06-2010, 08:40 PM dude you live in chicago. If you need to upgrade your trans temp now there's some serious tranny issues.

jettech 02-06-2010, 09:31 PM Dude,I got the time now,I'm not gonna wait till whenever, when other vendors have them in stock, and cheaper.
Now can anybody answer the question.

I am presuming that your '06 is like my '07 Classic. The lines come out the front. In addition to matching where the lines come out, you ant to make sure that any cooler you buy has the mounting tabs to match the stock cooler unless you want to do the fabrication required. I can't comment on anything but the Mike L cooler — and that is a simple bolt in. Pull the grill, pull the cooler, replace and reassemble in less than an hour. I believe that Mike's cooler is an adaptation of the very high quality Setrab coolers. Point is, it has the correct fittings for the transmission lines and the bolt attachments — and fits the space like the OEM cooler. On the other hand, PPE does specify different years for their coolers — you should probably call them.
knaffie 02-07-2010, 01:36 PM I'm curious what made you know you needed an upgraded trans cooler. Were your temps getting too high? What were you towing?

Thats why I'm trying to find someone who actually has one to verify where PPE's lbz model has the line ports before I drop $400. I'm assuming the pics I keep seeing are for the lb7 or lly. I sent PPE and the vendor I'm considering buying from an email to try and verify but it is superbowl weekend. So thats probably gonna be a Monday phone call to try and get more info. Thank for the extra info,I hadn't heard of Setrab before.

I wouldn't say it's a need, the 06 model cools fairly descent. But I read an article somewhere relating trans temp to overall health of the trans. It was comparing wear, slippage, miles till requiring overhaul to different temps in like 5 degree increments. In short the article was showing drastic improvements in reliability and long term trans health with even small amounts temperature decrease. I mostly use my truck for towing and plan on having it a long time. On a trip out west this last summer it was running a bit warmer than it normally does,I'm usually about 180 towing. On that trip I was seeing 190-200 at times, granted it was 110 degrees outside. If these upgraded coolers provide anywhere near the extra cooling they claim I think it will do a lot of good maintaining the alli in good condition.
knaffie 02-07-2010, 06:07 PM Sounds like a good justification to me! Post up some pics when you put it in so noobs like me can see.
