: Tire Pressure
My onstar emailed me the my right rear tire was low on air. I went over to my local service place and borrowed their air hose, one of the guys came over and told me that I should run about 60 psi. (my tires say 80) to smooth out my ride. I told the guy that onstar emailed me about low tire pressure, he told me that it was not noticing the pressure but rather the difference in pressure, he said if all my tires were at the same pressure (60psi) it would be fine. I went ahead and reduced all my tires to 60 psi, before I got home the warning was coming up on my dash that all my tires were low on pressure, I went back and filled them up to 70 psi and no more warnings.
What do you guys run for pressure? I don't really haul anything and I tow a small tent trailer. By the way I have a 2008 3/4 HD
prostar 02-05-2010, 01:36 PM 55 front 50 rear no tps on my wheels
Shawn-VA 02-05-2010, 01:39 PM Yeah, by default GM has them configured to have the TPS running at the 80psi. you need to hit up a Dealership to have them lower it so you can run the 50 to 60 psi. I run 55 front 50 in the rear. And the ride is much better. Now, thats unloaded with notowing.

So the dealer can change the tire pressure requirement? I am guessing that is something they would charge me to do???

Had mine changed about 2 months ago. My dealer didn't charge me. Run about 60 psi in the winter and 70 psi towing my trailer in the summer.
chevdude 02-05-2010, 03:47 PM My 09 with 17 inch tires run 55 frt and 60 rear arounf town....if U go lower the light will come on and Onstar will send ur monthly report showing low tires...I ignore it.

Always run 55-60psi cold up front as the Dmax is about 900lbs heavier than the Vortec gas V8.
I have the factory 265/70R17s and I am advised via the door sticker to run 72psi in the rear. This is down right dangerous when unloaded so I run my rears at 55psi cold most of the time. Remember to air up when hauling but just ignore the Onstar BS, it's a waste of time.
55 keeps the light off and remember in the summer your tire pressure will increase by 5-10%.
JIMMMY 02-05-2010, 06:03 PM Have the TPM system reset to 65 psi all the way around - then run them 50/50 or 60/50 front/rear - you get a warning below 50 and above 80psi then since the warning lights up at 15psi +/-.....
;)
I also have an 08 3/4 Ton. When it was new I swapped the factory tires for Cooper LT265/75R16. Couldn't handle the 80psi factory requirement for the rear tires. Called Cooper factory rep & he said that the 80psi listed on the door placard for the rear was for "loaded" weight. Cooper recommended running 60psi on front & rear based on the vehicle weight. Also mentioned to adjust air pressure on rear when loaded. After complaining to GM customer service several times they set it up for my dealer to change the TPM setting. Charged me 1/2 hr of labor, but well worth it. Change the rear alert setting from 80 to 60psi. Left the front alert at factory setting. Run about 55 on the rear & 60 on the front. I increase the rear tires to 70-75psi, when pulling a big load. Nice to not get that annoying alert any longer.
Diesel II 02-06-2010, 06:56 AM Since new have always run the pressures recommened on the door tag - 60 up front and 72 in the rear. Rotated usually around every 15k. Have around 1000# in the bed all the time if not more sometimes. I always thought the truck rode excellent with those pressures for an 8000# truck and put 60k on the factory Bridgestone Duravis M700 265/70r17's. Just switched to 285/70r17's on 17x8.5 wheels and am running 55 up front and 60 in the rear. The new tires are load D rated so the max pressure is 65 psi rather than the 80 psi for the E rated factories. I am pleased with the ride on the new setup - I may play with the tire pressures a little to see what works best for ride and wear. I would still be running door tag pressures if the tires were rated so - thought that those pressures were fine. Always adjusting for outside temperatures as well to keep those pressures in check.

Open up your driverside door and you will find a sticker that will tell you what was recommended for THAT vehicle, mine was 74 psi rear and 62 front
dancerdog 02-06-2010, 11:45 AM I have always run the 60front and 80 rear and I think my truck rides great, a lot smother then my 98 2500.

LMM_Guy 02-06-2010, 01:04 PM Some dealers will give you a hard time about changing the TPMS parameters. It's a federal mandate that the system be on all new vehicles and GM has taken an official "nope can't touch it" stance when it comes to modifying the parameters, but they still gave the Tech II the ability to change the parameters......I had to shop 3 different dealerships before I could find one that would do it. I think it's GM's version of dont' ask don't tell.......:p:
trapper704 02-06-2010, 11:53 PM It tells you in the manual how to change computer settings for your tires. put 10 lbs over what you want to run. I think (without looking) you turn key on hold both lock and unlock buttons till horn honks, then start with drivers front tire and let out air to where you want, inlike a min or two horn will honk go to pass. front then rear and end with driver rear. :D
LMM_Guy 02-07-2010, 12:42 AM Uhhh trapper, please go read your manual again. That's the procedure to re-orient your tires once you rotate them. You're just telling the BCM where each of the sensor are once you move them. You have to let air out or put air in in order to wake up the sensor and send a signal to the BCM.......no pressure calibration involved.
Sorry bud need a tech II.
trapper704 02-07-2010, 01:15 AM try it it works.
LMM_Guy 02-07-2010, 01:18 AM Are you serious? or just trying to get a good laugh.......the internet has a way of covering up sarcasm.
It doesn't reset your tire pressure limits.............:confuzeld
sigepsb 02-07-2010, 01:58 PM I run 65 Front and 70 Rear and it has definitely worn out the center of the tires in only 20K miles. I really need the TPMS changed, but I know the dealers around here are going to be useless.
Shasta 02-07-2010, 03:05 PM try it it works.
If you are trying to change the TPMS threshold... uh... no it doesn't...
I had mine reset to 50 psi all around. Usually run 45 rear, 55 front unless I have the camper on. Much, much safer having the entire tread actually touching the pavement at that pressure. Tire life is greatly extended as well.
BTW you will get the warning at the high end as well; mine sets the alarm at about 70 now.
